What does the NAV RADIO do?

Recommended Posts

Can someone please explain to me the function of the navigator radio? (As found in the Cessna Radio stack)

My understanding of the stack:

Comm radio: 1 or 2 tuneable frequencies with tx and rx functionality allowing communication with ground, traffic or tower

Transponder: Allows interrogation by SSR radar and provides position, alt (if available) and squawk code

... that makes sense, but..

nav radio: 1 tuneable frequency, can be used as rx only radio in emergencies - what else does it actually do? is it normally tuned to the AWIB or ATIS at all times and just leave volume down when not needed? does it actually provide some sort of navigational direction to the pilot?
