FSXAssist / Windows 8.1 First Thoughts

Recommended Posts

We at SkyPilot ventured into Windows 8.1 this week and have a few initial impressions that we wanted to share.

1) Performance wise Windows 8.1 is on par or better than Windows 8 but further testing is being done.

2) Windows 8.1 no longer crashes on a task switch.  While this is a great thing for many we at SkyPilot are no longer able to test our FSX crash recovery code easily :(.

3) The FSXAssist Autosave feature no longer works in Windows 8.1 even with UAC disabled.  We are looking into this.

4) FSXAssist works much more reliably in Windows 8.1.  Closing FSX no longer causes sporadic restarts which is a welcome thing.

5) The MadCatz / Saitek Cyborg X (Windows 8.0) driver install went very smoothly as compared to what was experienced in Windows 8.

6) FSX default flights were very smooth with unlimited FPS in the 70's.  These are with the latest nForce drivers and an nVidia Inspector setting of ADAPTIVE for Vertical Sync Tear Control.

Our initial recommendation is to give Windows 8.1 a try if you are ensured that you can obtain working  Windows 8.1 drivers.  In our case our MoBos are the same (MSI MPower Z77) and we needed to buy an external WiFi solution as no driver was available for our MoBo built in WiF (Atheros 9271)i.
