FSUIPC installed? That little program (and the best is, even the freeware version provides all the important code) helps to reduce many FSX crashes IIRC. Also, putting an older version of the UIautomationcore.dll (can't remember which one at the moment, but there's a thread from a few weeks past here on the forums, if you do a little search see the next post for a link) into the FSX root directory can help reducing crashes related to the menu.

Same applies for FSUIPC, it should really do no harm to your FSX install. But it will most certainly help with crashes.

See post #5. There's no "correct" version for it, as long as you download the FSX version.

This sounds related.  I have a brand new Gateway with an Intel I5 chip and a Nvidia 640 1 gig video card on Windows 8.1.  Intially loaded FSX with no problem.  However, after I loaded some third party scenery (some FS9 that worked fine with last Windiws 7 machine) it wouldfreeze on start of flight.  So after several of these, I decided to umninstall and reintall the program.  Guess what FSX wasn't in programs and features, so I deleyed the folders directly.  Now I can't get the FSX DVD 1 to work!  What's up?!
