Guys! Default X-Plane Ain't That Bad! (pics)

Well, as far as the OP.  I found the carrier for the first time and made sure I was in the stinson.   A bit of fun, you can land, take off in a handful of meters and if done right get back on the deck if you manage your speed.

The quality is great, I only hope that it's matched in DCS when it has carrier ops.  I will def show some of my mates who dont know xplane but fly the mil sims.   It wont convert them but they will be impressed.

Andras, how long until HDv2?! My excitement is getting out of hand! Although that may just be Friday feeling...

Patience my friends  ... It is just quite big from the computation point of view, and especially with my much higher config settings (to make it HD) for the scenery generator it is - depending on data density - sometimes running quite slowly (especially in big US cities).

BUT, I can tell you, that last night the USA computation has finished (though, I did Not have time to check if it really finished everything or if there are still some "broken" parts or loose ends left) and Europe is finished too. Now its Canadas turn, and finally Alaska will be computed (but both of them are less "urbanized, thus should run a bit faster in most regions than the USA).

In a next step I will do some "quality control", fly over a lot of regions, take screenshots etc. .... this will take me some more days (possibly over the next week). If everything is fine, then i can finally start uploading the many GBytes (40-50 or more) to the net. .... AND then, shortly after that (when its confirmed that the uploads are fine etc.), I can open the "doors".

By the way: if everything goes as planned, you should start creating a flightsim.com account, as this will be the new "hosting platform" for the big ZIP files (the guys over there were extremely generous, helpful and interested to bring as much X-Plane content to their site .... even if it is as large as this project).

That's a lotta' data...........!

Is that going to be purchasable on disk as well? I'm kind of scared that if I tried to download that much, somebody from my ISP might come and ring my doorbell to personally smack me upside' the head if I used that much bandwidth........

Nope ... it is free-/dontaionware (just like it is/was with HD Mesh v1) and as such there are no "different" delivery methods. But if you find someone to download it four you and copy on an external HDD, thats fine B). And by the way, it will be split up into packages covering 10x10 degree areas each. This way the largest files wont be over 2 Gbyte (so you could still consider to just download regions which are the most "interesting" for you).

I guess it depends on exactly what you mean by "better" Technically, XPX has no match. It shows more objects, has more effects, the roads are better and obviously has more potential........

But is it more believable? (Beyond the flight models!) I would actually submit that the Fs9 depiction of new York was actually more "believable" in certain important ways. It was a recognizable depiction of the city that you could identify without ever being told what it was. Same for Paris, or San Francisco or Los Angeles......

I was referring specifically to the rural areas I prefer flying in -- that is to say areas that don't get much love from scenery designers because apparently everybody wants to ogle these big, urban landscapes.  But for rural scenery, X-Plane 10 default is the best of the bunch.

Screw the ISP, I'd be more worried about my wife smacking me upside the head!

Yep, That is one of the little things that make a huge difference in the scenery. That was also one of my first addons installed for x-plane 10 and shortly after that was urbanmaxx.

I do wonder if the lod draw distance can be adjusted ? I'm at work so I can't play right now....

Are you talking about high altitude blurriness? If so, Ben said in the Dev blog they are working on that for 10.30. Ill be the first one in line for some kind of fix for that. :Praying:

Actually at altitude you will notice the tree-lines and farms fade out.........I wonder if there is a way to adjust this......could help areas in the mid-west look more realistic....

This is exactly how I imagined this discussion ending up :/

As you imagine it .. it will be so.

I am also waiting for the night lighting on buildings. Its been a long time, and it seems such a strange omission for a sim with such a reputation for its beauty at night........

Ditto!

If default x-plane aint bad, Using G2XPL to make free photoscenery is amazing!

I took some time and made LOD 17 Photoscenery of all of Southern California and it's amazing, since XPX will lay default autogen on top of it.

I am puzzled that Megascenery doesn't seem to be exploring Xplane. Market too small? Of course, I myself wouldn't be interested. Houses whose placement doesn't match the underlying photo-scenery is a big turn off for me.
