Experience with this scenery?

Recommended Posts

I have FTX Global but I just found something by a company called Mega scenery called photo scenery. It looks pretty awesome and it appears to get rid of all auto gen stuff though which I am not sure is good or bad?

Does anybody have any experience with this scenery and if you do which was better the photo scenery or the scenery with the autogen? Are they compatible with FTX Global?

Search the forum here and you will find hundreds of discussions on this.

BTW, there really is no one is better than the other, it just depends on which you like more or suites your needs. Price can also be a concern depending on if you want to spend hundreds of dollars to cover the US in photoreal or just want a global texture replacement set.

Yea I didn't think to search for it. What happens in the fall and winter though? Does the photo real scenery change or is it always just green all the time?

Photoscenery looks good at high altitude, not so good on the ground. It needs to be paired with good mesh and autogen, otherwise it can look flat. And often only one season is presented. My favorite photoscenery is of Hawaii, either MegaScenery payware or there is some excellent freeware by Ironhand for some islands.

Well I have FS global 2010 but I wasn't planning on installing it on my new computer. That was one of my concerns about it would be everything would look super flat while on the ground and there would be no trees or anything.

Are there any autogen buildings at airports and stuff or surrounding areas or is it just the photo scenery?

Does the photo scenery reflect season change at all?

There is a forum here at AVSIM dedicated to photoreal scenery call 'The Photoreal Scenery Support Forum', which has a lot of good threads with screenshots so you can judge for yourself if you prefer it.  I would download some freeware photo scenery and try it out for yourself as to weather you like your scenery "flat" or not.  You can add lot's of 3rd party enhancements to photoscenery so it will not look flat.  Some photo scenery include all the 3D goodies... like certain airports or city scenery.  Some, like MSEv2 only include the photo ground texture.

Seasons will not change unless the developer has included seasons (MSEv2 does not).  There will be no autogen but there will be library type buildings visible such as airports.  I would grab some freeware stuff from Bluesky for Las Vegas, Nevada, USA and then you can see how it mixes with the custom casinos, hotels and airport.

Some simmers prefer photoscenery and even prefer it without 3D buildings and vegetation.  Others can't stand it and choose to go another route.  Some, like me do a mix... photoscenery where I can get it.  Add my own 3D stuff.  Then use what else is out there for other areas.

Hope that helps,

FTX Global is just a replacement set of textures like the kind that are default with the autogen placed differently, but still the same generic tiles. photoscenery is a satellite image placed on the ground so you can fly over the real thing.

With photoreal, the pros are that you see the real thing from the air, it saves on performance if it doesn't have autogen like most don't, you can add your own objects and autogen to any photoreal tiles though for a complete experience. The cons are very large files sizes depending on the resolution (default FSX is 1 meter/per pixel), flat if no autogen, no seasons or night lighting if the author doesn't add it and last, but not least, many times airports don't line up with photoreal since the data that MS used is off, but an easy fix with ADE.

I prefer photoscenery with autogen myself!

Best, Michael

Thid shot should give you an idea how it works.  This is Megascenery Washington at Orcas Island airport.  I also have ORBX Pacific Northwest demo installed.  The 3d buildings, cars, planes you see are all placed there by ORBX.  THere is also moving traffic along the roads placed by ORBX.  So anything 3d objects deliberately placed by ORBX will show on top of the photoscenery.  That means HAND PLACED objects.  Autogen objects are not handplaced and will not show up.

This looks pretty good IMHO with the ORBS objects.

I will look into that and try it out. I like the autogen buildings and stuff but I thought maybe there was a way to add autogen on top of the photo scenery to like combine both worlds if that makes sense.

Yea that picture looks good. If only the photo scenery could be 3d haha.

Maybe try the $5 MegaSceneryEarth Hawaii package. That will give you a good idea of what you can expect for a nominal outlay.

After looking at more videos online it seems like there are quite a few buildings that are 3D. I just saw a video of mega scenery Las Vegas and it seemed like a majority of the bigger buildings were all 3d and looked great.

Is that the case with most major cities? Or am I correct in assuming that those buildings aren't autogen and therefore would show up that way anyway?

And now I just came across a bunch of cities from Aerosoft or something like that. I think that is what I was looking for. Sure it's not the whole state but it appears to have tons of 3d buildings and structures around the cities which is really what I was looking for.

Now can I just install those and use them with FTX Global and payware airports or do I need to re-order the scenery in the scenery library or something? Or does trying to use those programs together cause issues?

With MSE at least, some default 3D buildings will appear on top of the scenery. These are the buildings and objects that were "hand-placed" by Microsoft and are not part of the autogen system, and show through any photoreal scenery product.

Aerosoft cities are a good product. These also work fine with MSE products.

To see what would show through with a photoreal product like MSE, turn off your Autogen slider.  Any objects you see then would be seen with MSE installed.
