LM is closing down part of training system activities

This is really sad to know, and it's happening around here too - Europe.

Many years ago, when I was an avid amateur astronomer, consuming "Sky & Telescope" and "Astronomy", I decided to get a good catadioptric telescope, and the only viable sources were in the USA - Celestron, Meade or Baush & Lomb, but strangely, their production was being shifted to the middle east, and most Celestron models were already being assembled there.

Meade soon followed the same route. Baush & Lomb kept producing their stuff in the USA, but a couple of years latter had to abandon that line of excellent products ( I actually got my telescope from them - an excellent 8'' Schmidt-Cassegrain). I thought to myself ( this was around 1982 ) what's happening with this guys? Closing their plants and starting to build their models, using their technology and highly detailled precision machines somewhere on the other side of the World????

I guess we all know what the outcome was of such "strategic" decisions, accumated over years, there in the USA and here in Europe too...

I wish Wes would post something to let us all know if P3D is going forward.

This just posted at the ORBX forums :)

"NDA now allows us to post screenshots, were also allowed to let you know that it should be released this month, I’m about to download the beta 4 updates and will get some screenshots up ASAP.
Cheers"

From the P3D website today.

Nope, closing this thread as I cannot comment on general LM activity, but the Prepar3D team is going strong. (Referring to the LM layoff.)

Concerning P3D V2.0:

V2.0 will be released this month. More information to come next week.

v2.0 is a seperately licensed product for all licenses. It will be a new purchase if you choose to move to that product, regardless of what license you currently have or do not have.

All the information regarding v2.0 will be posted to our website next week.

Thanks for your support and interest in Prepar3D!

Great news all around!

100% of accidents are human-error.

The fewer humans are involved, the better for my health.

Thanks,

Minos

For me personally it will be a cold day in hell before I got on a pilotless aircraft.

And that is the very reason why pilotless aircraft will never see the light of day. I suspect every single person on the planet would share your view.

I'd be interested to see a source for that 100% statistic.

Some accidents not caused by pilot error:

  • Air Alaska 261
  • Iran Air 655
  • Japan Air 123
  • American Airlines 96
  • Turkish Airlines 981
  • Air India 182
  • Pan Am 103
  • Partnair 394
  • Tan Son Nhut disaster 1975
  • Challenger Shuttle disaster
  • Colombia shuttle disaster
  • American Eagle 4184
  • British Airtours 28M
  • US Air 1493/Skywest Airlines 5569
  • Korean Airlines 007
  • Chalk Ocean Airways 101
  • British Airways 38
  • Continental Express 2754
  • Nigeria Airways 2120
  • American Airlines 191

Some incidents not caused by pilot error and saved by the pilots on board:

  • United Airlines Flight 811
  • Air Transat 236
  • British Airways 5390
  • DHL OO-DLL
  • Fedex 705
  • Phillipine Airlines 434
  • British Airways Flight 9
  • US Airways 1549
  • TACA 110
  • United Airlines 232
  • Reeve Aleutian Airways 8

Thinking about it a little more, ground-based operators would need to be fairly expert in their role, so they'd need to be paid accordingly. Would that salary end up being so much less than that of a pilot, whose salaries appear to be heading ever-downward anyway? These controllers will need somewhere to work from - a bit like an ATC centre, I would imagine - they're hardly going to do it from a standard office desk. More cost.

And remote drone controllers are human, therefore the potential for human error wouldn't be removed, just relocated.

All in all, I wouldn't be surprised if the airlines decided it would be easier to just leave the pilots in the cockpit. In any case, as has been pointed out, it's the perceptions of the fare-paying public that will really determine whether or not there is a take-up of unmanned passenger flights, even if the aviation authorities did sign off on it.

Um, just what is the original topic here?? Oh yeah, this is it:

LM is closing down part of training system activities

"Will P3D be affected? Another blow for our flightsim community?"

My response in #34 above answers the question straight from LM.
