On those specific fares, probably they don't, unless you pay a lot more for the return flight. Usually the conditions for cheap fares are very specific, pushing you into flights that wouldn't fill up normally, or maybe they're just hoping to generate attention or return customers that will earn them money.

Indeed. They're probably just trying to keep their load factors up and will sell those seats at a loss. The business/first passengers will be funding those fares to a certain extent!

Spirit is an "ultra-low" cost airline.  So, you may pay ridiculously low fares for a one way ticket, but you will be nickel and dimed for everything extra you want to do.  If you can travel with just the clothes on your back, then you can fly this cheap.  But, if you bring a carry on, want a soda to drink, have to go to the bathroom, want to use the over head bin, or want to breathe in the air in the cabin, they are going to charge you for every single thing you do.  So, what looks really cheap, in the end turns out to be the same fare as if you'd flown on Westjet or almost any other airline.

Before even opening up this post, my first thought was ...... Spirit Airlines.  

 

This is their M.O.  Look up some past promotions, I remember a similar snarky ad campaign involving a certain N.Y. legislator (Anthony Weiner). 

And that's why I withhold my hard won A&P mechanic certificate services from the airlines. I prefer to work on subway trains,which cannot be flown out of the USA for cheap maintenance.
