November 19, 201312 yr I wonder what the procedure will be for extending and retracting the wing tips? Maybe a before taxi check or before takeoff check. November 20, 201312 yr The main goal of the folding wing tips is to take the 777X from an ICAO design code F aircraft, to a design code E. The max wingspan for a code E is 65 Meters, so all current 777 models fall into code E. The idea is that with the FWT the 777X could operate from any airport that currently supports 777’s while still having the longer more efficient wing. Since the code also sets requirements for taxiways, etc. the wings would need to remain folded until runway entry, and folded again after exiting the runway. There will of course be systems in place to remind the flight crew about the FWT position, including takeoff configuration alerting, full time EICAS indication of wing tip position while on the ground, as well as a system to alert on tip position when entering or exiting a runway.
