Migrating from FSX to P3D V2 pre-installation advice needed

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I, like many, will be installing P3D V2 on Monday for the first time. I have FSX and a whole bunch of add-ons such as Orbx, REX, Opus, etc.

Is there anything that I should be concerned about when installing P3D in case it effects the FSX installation or vice-versa? I understand that the latest updates to Orbx are already P3D ready.

TIA

Daz

P3D won't affect FSX at all. Just as Adobe Photoshop won't affect MS Office. ^_^

Getting the addons to work in P3D is another story. OpusFSX is already P3D ready: go to the options and tell P3D where it is on your HD.

Orbx will be releasing new installers for their addons or even complete new versions. The current installers are NOT P3D 2.0 ready!!! They only are P3D 1.4 ready. There seems to be a difference between the two. The installer for FTX Global will be released before P3D.

REX I don't really know: you can buy a license to use REX for P3D (for some 5 dollars) and then you can enable P3D in the REX interface, but I don't know yet if this option is P3D 2.0 ready. I (and a few others) asked about this on the REX forum but no one has answered this yet.

All in all you will have to check each developers site for other addons. I know the A2A C172 does work in P3D 2.0 but requires a manual install. Hopefully they will release a P3D 2.0 installer soon, and this goes for ALL addons!

what about this migration tool. Will this work for P3dV2? if this is the case than you probably can use almost everything..... will have to see after the release.....

I really hope that or the Q400 will work in P3Dv2, this will give us at least 1 profi sim.

The current installers are NOT P3D 2.0 ready!!! They only are P3D 1.4 ready. There seems to be a difference between the two.

This is because there will be a new and different Registry entry for P3D v2.0...

For v1.4 my installers find the SetupPath using this lookup routine:

ReadRegStr $INSTDIR HKLM "Software\LockheedMartin\Prepar3D" SetupPath

Many installers do allow for a "Browse" to be made to locate the root folder of whatever program you are installing to, but such use is not recommended.

Adding to what Jeroen wrote.

Space permitting:

To be on the safe side, I would do a full backup of all FSX folders (Not only the main FSX one)

Also I would not install any addon until testing it for a while and making a full backup of the P3D V2 clean install.

Do you mean the Orbx migration tool? There will also be a new updated 2.0 ready version of that one so you will indeed be able to link your FSX Orbx products 'into' P3D but not with the current version.

This is because there will be a new and different Registry entry for P3D v2.0...

Ah, so that's it. And that's all...!? I wonder why it's not recommended to use the browse option? This evening I was trying to find out which files of the A2A C172 I needed to copy from FSX into the P3D folder (because A2A there installer isn't P3D 2.0 ready yet) and I found out which files I needed by simply installing the A2A C172 again and directing it to a new and empty folder. After doing so I wondered why not install it that way into P3D 2.0? So I am curious why this is not recommended.

My question is... Are we going to be fine installing P3D on the same HDD as FSX or are there some things we should be aware of?

I use Separate SSD for each. FSX, P3D ,FS9 and OS. No need to BU anything.

Good advice. I already have a backup of all current complete FSX folders (I will be reinstalling the OS the coming days).

I also plan to install and test every addon I want one by one. So I will install P3D and test it without any addons. After that I will install the first addon and test again. And so on. This way I know what may be causing any problems if any problems will occur. I certainly won't do what I usually do with FSX (install FSX and ALL addons I want in one go. ^_^ )

You'll be fine. As I posted in my earlier post: according to your computer FSX and P3D will be just as different as for instance Adobe Photoshop and MS Office are. ^_^

Good to know! I figured that was the case but wanted to be 100% sure. Thanks!

In truth it's because sometimes folks do install to a ..\temp folder and then try to drag-n-drop files piecemeal into their sim, often screwing up files in their haste and/or confusion, then proceed to scream loudly in forums that the product is "junk" not realizing that it was their own incompetence that caused their problem(s)...

Also, sometimes there are Registry entries created by the installer's process that will be wrongly pathed if the initial install folder is improperly chosen (such as the above mentioned ..\temp folder.

Ah, ok. Luckily I am very competent. :hi:

Anyway, this seems to indicate that you only need P3D 2.0 ready installers to get the right path by default in the installer... which means I can install my A2A into P3D without any problems. Afaik the P3D option in REX also let's you set the path manually, which is another problem solved. Only Orbx stuff needs 2.0 ready installers because you can't browse with those.

As far as it concerns Fs Global Ultimate, i believe i can just point the P3D library to the folder where FS Global Ultimate is already installed withour having to reinstall it ?

too much, too soon....

If it does not install any other files than in Addon Scenery, then yes, you can simply point to sceneries that are installed outside P3D directory.

You can do the same in FSX and point it to scneries outside FSX directory.
