Is anyone going back to FSX now after 2 days with P3Dv2?

Featured Replies

After a full day of tweaking and tuning v2, I am very pleased with the performance so far on my system and am happy that my GPU is finally coming along for the ride. One thing I found is that Vsync does bring my FPS and smoothness down which was surprising but turning it off does not have any noticeable affect (read tearing or any other artifacts) on my system. Blurries are also significantly less than FSX which I like very much. I also noticed that SweetFX has a greater impact on FPS than it did in FSX.

I did find that my Dash 8 and QW Avro/RJ keep crashing but my AXE and ESDG CX 2.0 work fine. I also have artifacts with Orbx PNW but switching resolutions usually clears that up. I love the night lighting and that my system maintains an acceptable amount of FPS and stutter-free performance when flying at night. I can also finally use ground traffic without any noticeable effect and I am loving the shadows. One of the real tests for me is how it will run the -NGX and 777 but that is not really possible at this time due to the EULA issue.

To my mind, this is more like FSX with SP3 as it still has some of the shortcomings of FSX (32-bit, etc.) but that being said, it is a big improvement on FSX. Would I stop using FSX? No, not until PMDG officialy supports P3D and I can fly the 777 in it. Once that happens, I would seriously consider making the move.

It's basically the same as FSX's ATC.

^_^

BTW I can't get that ATC window transparent... Anyone else know how to get this done?

Still got FSX on my system but don't fly it...

The difference for me is phenonamal (Is that spelt correctly?)...

I am slowly going to upgrade starting with my graphics card but once I get my SSD for Flight sim then FSX is no more.

I am thinking of staying with my existing cpu/motherboard as I have my i7 2700K stable at 4.9 and Prepar3d is not so CPU intensive so it should suffice.

This is a known issue . . . they will fix this in a future update.

Overall I'm happy with v2 (mainly just that there are finally some real developments and support) but I am sticking with FSX for now. I've spent a few years with FSX and have it running like grease through a goose right now so there's not a lot of reason to switch, but I do expect that to change as LM patches and updates v2.

This forum atm is like walking into a church and seeing everyone happy clapping.

I remember some of you saying MS flight was the new fsx and would never use fsx.

Great LOD, great VC shadows and a great start. Back to fsx for me but glad I bought it and it will become the new fsx.

At this moment in time Xp10 has everything you talking about, amazing shadows lod and.....and is 64bit.#

Not got it but that is starting to look very good idd

ATM I think a lot of you need to come of the sugar drinks /wink

I'm sorry for being so happy with P3D 2.0, David. :P I was one of those guys who said MS Flight could become the new FSX but that was before MS dropped the program... I had high hopes for it but it was all for nothing. Now of course only the future will tell if my high hopes for P3D will come true, but I've already got what I wanted: all of the FSX possibilities combined with MS Flight-like graphic updates, although I immediately have to add I like P3D a lot more than MS Flight (of which I mainly liked the shadows and the fog). I would be very happy already when LM or the devs will make it possible to use my addon planes in P3D which is all that is missing for now. Everything else will be a bonus. I will never use FSX again. B) I hope...................

One thing to keep in mind... Since you have a Sandy Bridge CPU, if you upgrade your GPU to a PCI 3.0 model, it will only work on the bus at PCI 2.0 speeds, even if your MB has PCI 3.0 slots.

To get PCI 3.0 to work on your MB, you would have to replace your 2700K CPU with an Ivy Bridge 37xx model, as the PCI controller is on the CPU.

This is NOT a show stopper by any means. I'm I'm the same boat, (with a 2700K) but definitely intend to upgrade my GPU to a GTX770 4GB model anyway. I've got my 2700k working very well, and running very cool at a stable 4.5 OC, and would rather leave the CPU alone. My next step, down the road, will be to upgrade to a Haswell CPU and MB, but I'm in no hurry to do that.

Even though the data transfer rate between CPU and GPU will be about 10 to 15% slower at PCI 2.0 speed (vs. 3.0), the increased performance and bandwidth of the 770 compared to my existing 660Ti - and especially, the increase in VRAM from 2 to 4 GB will be a good thing for taking advantage of P3D's optimized use of the GPU.

The problem is that P3D does nothing for FSX's biggest drawbacks, like AI, SLI support, and of course 64bit support

Do you mean the "biggest drawbacks" for you?

None of the things you list were drawbacks in FSX to me. P3D does address a lot of issues that FSX had, that were a big deal to a lot of other people. But as I am sure LM are wise enough to know "you can't please all the people all the time".

Is it like a whole exponentially new platform? .. No, it's not. But for me, it is FSX with the ability to run lot's more (non-popping) autogen, heavier weather (and better weather), and with amazing cockpit shadows. All with more performance than, I'd have got in FSX without those things. So to you, fair enough it's no big deal, it's not addressing your 'list' but to a lot of people it is a big deal.

Not I sir! ....... I didn't even ever try it. I gathered from it's specs that it was a single dimensional game.

At this moment in time Xp10 has everything you talking about, amazing shadows lod and.....and is 64bit.

Not for ATI users. XP10 64 bit is an absolute pig on ATI hardware. The "64 bit" thing is revered a bit like the church of P3D! .... but something being "64 bit" means absolutely nothing, if it runs as badly as XP10 64 bit does, on ATI hardware.

I've had quiet a frustrated couple of days, and yes I'm sure "error between the ears" has contributed. Today after a fresh OS install and video tweaking I have a new and unsolved problem, when I try to switch airports it just crashes. I was kind of thinking maybe I had some write access protection issues but that doesn't seem to be it, just a bug and I'll keep trying to figure it out.

Am I to assume that all you guys are running quad core?

I gave in and downloaded it this morning. After 5 hours of playing with sliders and setting controls I have come to the conclusion that it does run better than FSX ,smoother and no micro stutters. But the graphics are blocky antialiasing I believe, can't get rid of it no matter what.

The other thing that's disappointing is I can't use any of the new features without it turning to crap. No shadows and no lighting.

I'll play with it for a day or two..then I'll probably ask for a refund.

If I were you I'd wait with that refund until your 60 days period is almost over: you never know what updates and patches will be released the coming two months or what tips and hints you might get. Also, if you ask for a refund now, take note that you won't get a refund later on anymore if you decide to buy the sim again.

I will be using FSX, with products that either do not work, or are not supported (at least not yet anyway).
