Is anyone going back to FSX now after 2 days with P3Dv2?

Featured Replies

Until they come up with some patches to fix the obvious problems I'm not even going to start it up anymore....just to spend all day fiddling with it instead of flying.

After spending the week testing out the software I have found I must turn off all the nice features of P3D v2 to avoid choppy frame rates. Oddly, using unlimited frames is giving the smoothest flying. I'll still keep tweaking around but if I want to do a quick flight with no hassle, it will be in FSX.

The problem is I'm running 5 monitors in portrait mode (5400X1920) with an AMD HD6990. In FSX I can get smooth flying with very high sliders. This is not the case in P3D v2. I have high hopes for P3D v2, the clouds are very nice and the non-popping autogen is immersive.

When the R9 290X comes out I'm going to see if that can run P3D better than the HD6990.

Can I just ask.....is the version of the Migration Tool available from SimMarket the updated one for use with P3Dv2?

Yes. The download link takes you to the developer site for the download where you get the latest version

£140 is a lot of money to pay for a new flight simulator.

Pssssst.....get the academic version for £31

I'm installing FSX now... Will have FSX in my dedicated SSD and their addons...and fly with it!

And will let p3d2 in the Windows SSD to continue waiting and testing it... And wait for the official addons support.

Yeah, here it is turned off with OrbX England installed

For comparison, FSX gives 16 FPS with this config, P3D is at 30 FPS. Double the performance with a HD7850 :O

Like what I am hearing, just waiting to see how the results play out photoscenery megaearth scenery can always buy cessna if needed

After fiddling with P3D all day, I found something that, at least on my system, made it quite useable. I disabled Hardware Tesselation and voila, I am now able to get decent performance (low to mid 20's FPS) in stock New York scenery at night in the Carenado C182Twith HDR and SweetFX both enabled and my sliders the same or greater than in FSX. I can only assume that my GPU is not powerful enough so like FSX, everything is offloaded to the CPU.

Maybe this might help others who are suffering from low FPS and the stutters......

I could not stop messing around.  I tried a custom screen resolution of 3600X1280 vs the native 5400X1920.  While not as crisp as the native resolution the flying is very fluid with mid sliders as long as the shadows are off.  This means I'll spend more time in P3D as it very fun to fly around enjoying the view.  FSX is still more trouble free but P3D has a new look to it.

I just finished a 90 minute flight in the ESDG CX 2.0 in stormy weather. First thing I noticed is that there is no longer a dry spot around the aircraft when its raining. The the next thing is that even when the FPS fell into the low to mid-teens, it was still smooth, no stuttering or hesitation when panning around or changing views. I really liked flying through the clouds and I kept getting distracted by the shadows moving around the cockpit.

I'm impressed.

The only need I have to keep using FSX now is to fly the QW Avro/RJ (still not stable for me in P3D) and the PMDG NGX and T7.

That being said, FSX will still be around for awhile but I do see the writing on the wall.

Come on PMDG, release the 777 for P3D.

Nearly 10 days later, this simmer is reluctantly dropping back and punting to the FSX world.

After installing, tweaking, transferring items (supported and unsupported), playing, experimenting, enjoying, yelling, and just spending far too much time on my computer in general, I've come to the conclusion that for me, P3Dv2 is not quite ready yet.

Despite the silky smooth visuals P3Dv2 usually provides, there was an inconsistency in performance from one similar scenery area to the next started to feel a little jarring. The autogen system seems greatly improved, but a texture rendering bug was rearing its head too often for my liking. I also found some inconsistent results using an airplane with a 2D mini-panel I had created - every other flight, the panel would decide not to appear when selected... most strange.  Many of these items are already acknowledged by either Lockheed Martin or the associated 3rd party vendor. It will be interesting to watch the various forums to see how the clean up. P3Dv2 meets my expectations brilliantly when it is running smooth and clean, however I ran into just enough inconsistent results to opt for a return to old faithful... FSX.

It's not the end of the world - I've never once experienced an OOM error on FSX and it's performance on my machine has been nothing short of excellent. I'll miss the absolutely GLORIOUS cloud fly-through capabilities of P3Dv2 for the moment (*holy COW is that perfect - are you seeing this, Laminar Research?), but I'll trade these new features for a more consistent, stable experience for the time being.

It is unlikely I'll be requesting a refund. Because of it's backwards compatibility, forward-looking rendering capabilites, and involved and invested development team, I have more faith in the future of P3Dv2 than any other simulation platform on the market today. The platform needs a little polishing right now, but given a little time, I suspect P3Dv2 will end up being exactly what I'd be looking for. Thankfully, I can still use P3D's "little brother" until she's ready. I see a lot of promise in this platform!

Well, I had quit following this thread a few days ago, because I'd reached a point where P3Dv2 was working good enough for me that I could consider making a switch from FSX to the new platform - the major addons I fly with were working (but in clear need of optimization), performance was outstanding, and the new features very much worthwhile.

When I can choose between forum posting and flying I always prefer to pick flying.

However, I was trying to get to the bottom of an issue that had came up on my system where I had square white semi-transparent boxes visible amongst buildings.  I had narrowed it down to something in FTX Global interacting with the haze/visibility layer.  To this end, I decided to test a clean version of P3Dv2 (one of the first things I had done was to install FTX Global).  So I made note of what settings were working well for me and proceeded with a reinstall, making sure to check and clean out all the spots where P3D leaves stuff.

On reinstall, I proceeded to match my configuration to what I had been running.  Looked at the frame rates; a little better performance, consistent with what I'd seen previously - FTX Global comes at a small performance penalty, about 5 - 10% on my system.  Then I started to pan around, looking for white boxes.  There weren't any, which was good, but...

Panning around now makes every cloud in my immediate vicinity 'rotate' quite significantly.  Except for the cirrus clouds, they stay put.  But all the rest, rotate.  Small clouds completely rotate; larger ones rotate in portions, like gears meshing together.  Checked to make sure I have detailed clouds turned on, yes, they are.  Check it in the config file, again, yes, they are.  It's hard to explain, and a screenshot doesn't describe the situation, because when you aren't moving, they look okay.

So after checking and rechecking all of my settings over and over, deleting the .cfg file and the shader cache to no avail, changing and checking weather themes, I decided to do another re-install.  I've now done 3.  Nothing has helped.  P3D is now completely un-flyable for me with clouds present in the sky.

I'm stumped, and I have no idea what to do.  I've posted in the P3D forum, but the issue hasn't been responded to by a dev.

So close, yet so far.

I hope my issue can be resolved, since I've seen how smooth P3D feels, how much immersion the new shadows add, how great the new autogen system can be (I took a flight in FSX last night... the autogen popping was the first thing I noticed).

But for now, for my regular flying, I'm back to FSX.

Blue skies Jim, hopefully we'll see ya back in a few months. Sorry to hear about the showstopper there though,. that's an odd one.

I've actually refused any scenery addons for P3D2 so far. I'll wait until FTXG is properly patched/vetted, and that will probably do it for me. Unless and until the 4096 texture idiocy fades away, I think I've purchased my last airport

Good luck, though, sincerely.

Brian Doney

I noticed this the other night and thought it was a lighting effect of some sort.

I'd ordinarily try an uninstall and reinstall, but you've got me worried about the cloud performance.  I'll probably wait for the FTXG patch, but if anyone comes up with a solution to the white boxes, please advise.

The more I use it the less issues I have. This is true of anything new.

Over the first week it's been up, down and round the bend for me. It shows you what it can do. You zap a setting to max, you try it and it looks amazing. Then it's back to reality. You become more conservative. Some people reading the posts, soon catch on to the fact and laugh haha see they have had to go back to FSX like settings. Soooo untrue.

My FSX, has years of stuff added to it. It allows me to do whatever I want. It is complete. Well!

Will I go back to it full time? No. Went back to it yesterday for the first time since P3D was released to do some comparison videos. They speak for themselves in my eyes.

But that's me, we are all different. We all see with different eyes.

I know what you mean - I took a flight in FSX last night, after spending some time getting NI properly set up for my new GPU. The very first thing I noticed was the popping autogen... I hope I can get my P3D cloud issue resolved, because there's certainly a lot to like!
