Is anyone going back to FSX now after 2 days with P3Dv2?

Featured Replies

FSX is now in the HISTORY BOOKS of flightsim( at least in my books)

I am very impressed by P3D and the LM developers.

My testing so far has been on my old PC with an Win8.1 - i7920 3GHz - GTX570 system.

It is butter smooth and solid, no issuses at all

Later today I will fire it up on my Win8.1 - i72600K - 4.5GHz GTX780 system and it is going to be just better.

Just wanted to make sure that FSX is now history in the flightsim evolution.

Is anyone going back to FSX now after 2 days with P3Dv2?

Please explain.

Hello Roar, I have been already fully P3D v1.4 for as long as P3D has been out. It works great with your drivers and my cockpit 737NG. I only fly the NGX from PMDG and use your great software with the Opencockpits + others cockpit built. So far I have tried v2 but did not manage to get the bird up and running in V2. When I select the 737NGX it crashes, so for me no go so far.

Has anyone found a good way to make it fly in v2? Thank you.

Prepar3D 2.0 looks a lot more blurry compared to FSX. Do you have FXAA turned on?

Yeah, here it is turned off with OrbX England installed

For comparison, FSX gives 16 FPS with this config, P3D is at 30 FPS. Double the performance with a HD7850 :O

I have just waved a sad goodbye to FSX;  uninstalled and retired to pastures greener.

The Q400 working in P3D2 was the defining thing for me.   I will miss the NGX and MD-11 but will look forward to PMDG's P3D proposition (as long as pricing is acceptable; which I am nervous about, from Robert's comments).

In the meantime I now have 18 fantastic aircraft working perfectly in P3D2 and that is enough to keep me busy.

Like someone else said, I could no longer justify the HD space, knowing that I would not be flying FSX again.

Can you tell us what they are Dave?

I've taken the plunge and not only purchased P3D, but also a new EVGA GTX 770 4gb  :O  for £350, I must be crazy

I also bought Track IR, both are due for delivery tomorrow B)

I thought I'd do a bit of testing though to get some direct comparisons so I at least feel like it was money well spent! as I haven't been using FSX for some time so I've sort've forgotten how poor performance was at times

The first test was to install both sims from scratch and begin taking screenshots and recording FPS at different stages

My current graphics card is a Radeon HD 7850, processor i7-3770k @ 3.90ghz, 12gb RAM

So by sharing an FLT file between both sims, and installing just the UK2000 Gatwick scenery in xtreme mode, I've found that both sims actually look quite similar out of the box. It's difficult to get an exact comparison, but I've tried to set everything the same where possible, at least to a point where the sims look broadly the same

So like for like as far as I can tell, I'm seeing autogen extending futher on P3D, and FPs is around 18-19 on FSX and around 33-34 on P3D

P3D is on the left

Well, the autogen density looks convincing at the least, and almost double the fps? Hmmm!

With the Quality Wings 757 running, it's certainly feeling the strain now, I see about 20 FPS at UK 2000 Gatwick, but this would've been down near 10 or less in FSX

I think with the addition of one of the AI addons it would become borderline and unnacceptable to some people on my rig certainly, but I'm asking too much of it really. It's conclusive for me though, P3D outperforms FSX by some considerable margin, and it's a lot prettier IMO. Just took the Quality Wings out over the bay at the default airport (Langley AFB?) and with the autogen cranked to max, the ocean and sky looked awesome. Plenty smooth at that airport at around 30 FPS and this is a pretty mid-range card I'd say (Radeon HD 7850)

GTX 770 due tonight on Amazon evening delivery!!

I'll probably stick with FSX until P3D is a 64-bit app, full 64-bit compatible add-ons, as well as optimized for SLI support. I don't have SLI right now, but I'll probably get it with my next system I build. FSX runs very well for me, so I'm not in a rush to upgrade. Plus, I've got some expenses coming where I'll have to put my simulation hobby on hold.

Yes I did! But I didn't have much choice, as my +6-year old beast decided that it was time to die in July.  I was planning on waiting a few more months, but I came out ahead in the end.

I'm sorry that you have to wait a bit longer, but (for me at least) the wait was totally worth it.

I haven't seen too much boat traffic, as most of my flights have been in the mountains so far (I'm pretty sure that there were a number of AI boats in Boston harbor, when I flew into Logan).  But the road traffic is definitely there, and it doesn't seem to be much of a FPS hit (I have traffic set around 30%).

I actually saw my first flock of birds last night. :)

Arwen, is the speed of the road traffic now appear more life-like than in FSX?  In FSX as you know, it was always way too fast in relation to the speed of the craft you were flying and viewing with....

I have the impression it is. But it never really bothered me in FSX so I might be wrong. And I am also not Arwen so why am I posting this...

With FSX I run the following programs simultaneously:

FSCommander

Accufeel

Rex

Opus

FsCaptain

Soundstream

Radar Contact

SPAD

UT2

ORBX Global

Addon Airports and other scenery

etc.

Interested to know how P3D performs when all the addons are running with it.

Yup, that is the million dollar question.

My guess would be that with a decent GPU (with at least 2GB VRAM) it would run that lot considerably faster than FSX....... and with a low spec GPU with 1GB or less, it would run considerably slower than FSX.

FSX is calling for a Priest :P

Yes? What can I do for FSX...

...as far as I know I'm the only resident priest, unless there are some who aren't "out of the rectory" yet!  :LMAO:

It seems a bit slower than in FSX, but it does only seem to appear on the major highways (like Interstates only) . . . I also have FTX Global installed (but I don't believe that has any effect on traffic).

Afaik this was the case in FSX too....? You would only get traffic elsewhere with UTX and FTX.
