I'm impressed

Recommended Posts

Full disclosure - I vowed never to return to FSX  / I refunded P3D v2 and fully planned on returning to P3D 1.4.. But as I browsed my external  drive to start the 1.4 install process I saw my FSX iso backups sitting there and remembered quite a few talking about FSX and the DX10 improvements.. So I grabbed Steves DX10 files out of here, reinstalled FSX, added the normal CFG file tweaks.. Reinstalled addons I haven't used for ages like UTX, GEX etc.. Applied SGSSAA, threw in some REX textures, set target to unlimited and... I just spent 2hrs flying without a single problem and VAS usage with GEX, UTX, full sliders and KPHL was less than that of P3Dv2 w/ default scenery and KPHL. Occasional blurrie but no more than v2 had..  Orbx PNW was just the same story.. High frames, smooth and little very blurries. Which ones I did get were gone pretty darn quick. I'm starting to think the reason I had such a bad time w/ FSX in the past was I always ran with AMD cards.. This is my first time w/ a Nvidia card. I even tried DX9 mode.. No issues but DX10 mode w/ the shader fixers is pretty darn sweet.

Long story short.. I'm enjoying the taste of my foot..

Nice story.  Think you are right about the AMD cards.  NVidia was the first one to support FSX and Vista.  ATI/AMD got upset Microsoft released a new OS (they liked XP) so they were slow in developing drivers for Vista (the OS released after FSX was released).  I remember Phil Taylor (the lead developer for FSX) was working with NVidia on fixing some graphics issues (mainly the Z-fighting which SteveP has pretty much fixed with the shaders).

Glad to hear you are enjoying FSX/DX10 Preview!

Best regards,

Well I was using FSX still up to just over a year ago before I switched to P3D 1.3 and.. The blurries were terrible on my AMD card despite the hours and hours tweaking and the cloud shader fix.. I lost count of the times I'd take off from somewhere and look out the window and see muddy textures. Nothing I ever tried eliminated the problem completely and the only difference between my computer now and my computer then is  I was using an AMD 6990 then and now I'm using SLI GTX 680 Twin Frozrs..   I know FSX doesn't make full use of the GPU but whatever it does I'm starting to suspect was bottling necking the CPU with my AMD card at the time.

Just out of curiosity.....would FSX make use of the extra VRAM on a 2GB card compared to a 1GB card? In other words, would it cure stuttering if the stuttering was due to insufficient VRAM?

Yep.. I'm sitting at Orbx KHQM w/ PNW installed right now in DX10 mode (AA box ticked) 8X SGSSAA and I'm eating up approximately 1.25GB of VRAM and both GPU's pegged at 95% usage...
