I've just learned from Kyle that my beloved MD-11 now has to be considered a museum piece.  

What a shame, Oliver. And with it still seen at airports around the globe, albeit in cargo form. Still my most favourite aircraft. Beautiful to look at. Such clean design lines.

 

Maybe SkySim will throw resources at it for a P3D version.

If making the MD-11 P3D compatible is simply a matter of updating the installer to work with the new P3D file and folder structure, I would urge PMDG to consider it. I, for one, would gladly pay full price for a P3D version of the MD-11 just it is - no panel or system updates whatsoever.

 

I realize however that it may not be so simple as just updating the installer, or re-compiling the DLLs, plus there may be issues with PMDG's license with Boeing that would preclude selling a P3D version.

 

But, if an updated installer is all it would take to make the MD P3D-ready, and licensing is not an issue, it would seem a good way for PMDG to get some additional revenue out of the MD-11 product with (possibly) minimal investment of developer time.

I'm not sure if this is even possible, but I think most would settle for an update that provides a new external model and VC with the same systems as before and the addition of WX and TERR. The MD-11 is the best and most unique product they have ever done. The 737 and 777 are nice, but the MD-11 has character.

If the PMDG MD 11 is so unpopular then why have PC Pilot magazine just published a 62 page special edition exclusively on the MD11?

I would imagine that there would be very little work involved in getting this up and running for P3D.

A real shame when a developer walks away from a product that still has great potential.

From PMDG's perspective, they have to look at what makes the most monitory sense over time. And one would presume, the MD-11 doesn't win. Pretty standard business practice, and given how small the flight sim community is it makes even more sense

Yes I can appreciate the business decision from a monetary point of view but also factored into a business decision should be supporting the existing customer base.

I would have thought that developing installers for P3D and perhaps even FSX steam would be relatively straight forward and provide a good developer time/cost ratio and be another revenue stream. With relatively so few aircraft available for P3D I would imagine the uptake of this may be better than it was for FSX. The P3D platform is more of a serious simmers platform and this type of aircraft complexity is much more suited to that user.

Just maybe they will "surprise us" as they did with their U turn on P3D support.

I'd be happy with updated cockpit textures. That's all it really needs I think. There are McPhat textures for the external model and the systems, etc, are very well done.

The MD11 is PMDG's second best all-time release. Intimidating at first, but with rich, deep systems, flightdeck experience completely different from either Boeing or Airbus, top-notch frame rates and very little VAS consumption (you see, PMDG, it is possible! ).

Hmmm...I've never bought anything PMDG, having a fairly low-spec system (2.4Ghz, 4GB 1GB video, 64-bit) and always figured to try PMDG when I finally upgrade. This MD-11 thread is interesting though, and your comments and the published spec requirement makes me consider taking the plunge with this, or possible the J41. Not sure about the price, though.

 

What about the comments about updating the VC? Is it that bad? I see the PMDG screenshots emphasise 2D panels pretty heavily, and I never use 2D panels.

It's not that bad. I am comparing against the later aircraft, which is perhaps a little unfair, but when you are using the 737 and 777 all of the timeouts a noticeable difference. If you haven't or doing use the later aircraft, it's not really an issue!

+1. It's not as crisp as PMDG's later offerings but perfectly useable - "good" not "great." The J41's VC is crisper, and both are great aircraft to fly - get them both if you can

Just taken her for a spin after reaching saturation point with the 777.  Forgotten how much fun she is to fly, particularly on a short hop, EGSS-LFPG, a real life trip for FedEx MD-elevenses.

 

Wow!  What a climb.  What a...well, it could go on all night. 

 

Delving deeper, looking at the LSAS and the RCWS and all that goodness, that makes it such a joy to fly, well ,I'd be amazed if PMDG didnt port it to P3D at some point, as a huge amount of clever coding clearly went into all that backoffice stuff.
