I'm speechless

Recommended Posts

There is definitely a market in this sort of service, after using FSX for 10 months I realise there is so much for me to learn, part of that is the fun of it but it can also get frustrating, when I first started flying i never realised so many things could be added and "tweaked", if someone could get me an extra 10FPS then I would pay them especially on my system but of course its a risk letting someone you have never met "take control" of your system.

Am reading through the configuration guide at the moment, I printed it out last month, makes good reading with a cuppa ( english tea)

Bottom line is you've got someone with the knowledge to offer a service (no idea of his level of knowledge but I can only presume some...) that lots of folks are unable/unwilling to do for themselves - what exactly is wrong with that? You wouldn't bring your car to a garage and expect them to work for free would you?

It'd be a different matter if this guy were charging to do the work and making the problems worse, or failing to get any results, but I'm not seeing anyone claiming that...

Perhaps ye feel that all addons should be provided for free and users pay as much or as little as they think it's worth? It's the same principle...

You'll have to pay attention to every step he makes in your system, using TeamViewer, and you'll have to thoroughly check all installed applications and security settings after he's left the session.

Is that, by any means, worth it?

If it's getting me 10 more FPS while being able to crank Autogen and LOD radius settings without a smoldering OOM death... yes.  It is worth it.   If you let someone into your machine and then walk away you deserve what you get.   Be there, the entire time.    Although, at this point, unless again, all of his testimonials are made up, I think people would know by now if this guy was stealing military secrets or your porn collection from your HDDs while performing this service.  It's legit.

The comparison to bringing your car to a car and expecting to be charged for the repair seems legitimate at the first view, but then I thought a bit further: When I bring my car to a garage to have it repaired, I would definitely bring it to someone who I trust is a good car mechanic, not to someone who just tells me he's good at that and he'll take a few hundert Euros for that, maybe even in advance. Same applies for computers, and here I have even more concerns about security - that person will have access to all my data, and for some reason I already have a bad feeling when I leave my sister alone with my computer!

Of course there is nothing wrong about charging money for a service, but IMO it is always important that this persons prooves that he is trustworthy in the first place!

Let's not forget there was another person who offered this very same service and many thought he was the best thing since sliced bread. Sadly, he has passed away and his services are no longer available.

As one of Mike's (FSGS) clients I can attest to the fact that if someone does have the intimate knowledge of not only FSX but operating systems, then it it worth the money.

However I think, based on whats posted here, the difference is that FSGS only charged a fee AFTER the service was complete and the client was happy with the results, whereas this person is asking for money up front.

It may or may not be worth it, I would try to contact his prior clients and see what their experiance was. In any case if he can do what he says, 20eu is a cheap price, but as always, buyer beware.

As well as being with A2A I'm a real world IT tech 5 days a week. I often wonder why I'm being paid to fix things that anyone could have easily googled and followed a few step by step guides to fix, some even from MS or Apple themselves. Bottom line is there's the do it yourself way via people that offer advice such as the communities and websites and what not or there's the pay for it to be done for you way. Its just the way of the world and it makes perfect sense.

No idea on the FSGenius chap but if hes found a gap in the market and from all reports he does good work, then well done that man, sounds like a personal Computer service specifically aimed at FSX from what I'm hearing in this thread?

I think its also no different to Payware aircraft and scenery. The tools to create your own FSX aircraft are all free and full guides and communities exist to show you how to create your favorite aircraft or airport for FSX in amazing detail and at the end you will also have the skills to continue to do this for your second favorite aircraft or airport etc. But I bet everyone in this thread has purchased payware aircraft or scenery or somesuch. Because not everyone has the time to or even wants to learn how to model, UV map, code in XML, C#, C++ Java, follow SDK's etc.

Hell to be honest the tools to create your own sim from scratch are all free too and some people do start there own up, X-plane, Flight Gear, Aerofly fs and plenty of other little projects (not so little now for a fair few).

Well that's the way I would view things reading this thread anyway and hearing, reading some of the youtube comments on the popularity of this chap.

thanks,

Lewis

I've read his testimonials, been through his Facebook page and watched a few of his videos.  I would say that this is as legit as you can be certain of on the internet.

Whilst I spend hours on FS forums and have tried and tested just about every tweak and tip ever recommended (and removed 80% of them), some people have no inclination to do this and for £20 many will find what he does well worth it.

He is clearly an FSX enthusiast and has spent considerable time making some interesting videos - A less legit person would no doubt be charging a lot more and claiming he was achieving miracles (which he is not).

Bottom line, everything he is doing, you can do yourself if you take the time to study, but if you can't be bothered, the £20 is peanuts to have someone help you to tweak.

I think there would not be too many people using FSX at all, if it weren't for volunteers freely giving of their time. I dunno - maybe he's got a good thing going. Maybe it's time for a re-think on how we value our time.  :Money Eyes:

That is a major difference. I won't pay the garage for my car repair job until it is completed to my satisfaction.
