Why can AVSIM not be a troll free zone

Recommended Posts

It is a shame that the AVSIM forums have turned into such a site for trolls.

I am forced to ask; since when? Or, alternatively; you just noticed? Depending upon your perspective, we have been through cycles of "contention" or "calm" since our very beginning in 1997. There is nothing new today than has not previously shown itself over the last 18 years.

There are quite a few members on here that I would ban if I was a moderator because I can see how they are bringing these forums down.

You have  access to the REPORT button. Use it. But... just because someone disagrees with your point of view, or whatever, doesn't necessarily mean we will ban them. It has to be pretty onerous for us to ban.

I think it may be time to do like many others have done and find another forum, where people respect the hobby that we all share and have mutual respect for other members.

So, this is what it is really about? Go somewhere else cause you don't like it here? We have a community of nearly 120,000 strong and with an average of 800 to 1,000 users online during any given 15 minute window.

I think you do a lot of people here a severe disservice and in fact insult them, when you imply that they have no respect for the hobby and do not have respect for other members. You just made a wide sweep generalization at a whole bunch of good people.

If it is that bad, then I agree with you. Do go create a forum that you can control and enforce your version of respect for both the hobby and each other. It really is that easy to do.

Even P3D v2 isn't getting that much discussion outside of the few here on Avsim. I could go into the reasons I believe this is but that's for another day.

I am interested in this comment, why do you think it is?

If aliens from space were to read YouTube comments I think they'd deduce that mankind are beyond help and would probably nuke us!

Aliens would probably be more efficient and convert humans to food or energy leaving the rest of the inhabitants to continue on in harmony.

I would love to know how many of those 120,000 buy 3rd party content :)

Trolls do actually serve a beneficial purpose even if they are unaware ... hit counts, being exposed to 3rd party advertisements, etc. etc. - this is all good for AVSIM and FS content providers ... even if the ratio is 1 in every 100 trolls buys some content they saw in AVSIM.  So don't hate on Trolls too much and there is always the option to just "ignore" ;)

And yes I've also noticed the rash of XP10 posts in an attempt to offset P3DV2 interest ... it's a funny world as the battle for market share and 3rd party content providers to be lured over to a user's selected FS platform rages on.

In response to the OP, the answer is simple.

I can't post the picture because of profanity, but it goes something like:

Normal Person ("Hi, how are you? Please! Thank you!") + Anonymity (Internet) + Audience

= Total ****head ($% you! UR WRONG! I know everything)

See, it's an internet wide problem. Not just Avsim.

I don't think trolls last very long here to be honest. I was trying to be funny by constantly re-using a certain word and I got put in my place (got the message - no one found it amusing). You should see what people over at Gamespot say to one another and get away with. Now there is some real trolling.

The rest is probably just human nature. Everyone having their own opinions etc etc. I do find some people here are more constructive than others but it's nothing particularly new in the world at large.

I think too that people are not used to normal consumers bring so pro platform. In the real world most companies are the ones going after the other. Not the consumers. That would be like driving a Chevy and walking through the mall parking lot and putting"Ford sucks" cards on people's trucks.

Kinda what goes on here Sometimes unsolicited one sided debates out of nowhere

Isn't that the guy who's in the Dos Equis commercials... "The Most Interesting Man In the World"?

There is a very simple view of this, though not a direct answer to your question... Potentially, all of them could buy 3rd party content. Another way to look at it is that this is an "addressable market", some portion of which is "capturable".

And he even had a perfectly running FSX installation 35 years before anyone else - "He flew his Learjet to Nova Scotia..."
