Disobedient V NAV

Recommended Posts

Greeting Chaps.

I have been enjoying the PMDG 747-4 and -8 for several years now and have come across a problem.

I have just done a fresh install of FSX and all my add-ons including the Queen of the skies.

When flying, She totally disregards the information in the FMC and climbs at her own rate.  Which is too steep which then brings on the low speed alarm. (Hate that sound)

Then she drops several thousand feet, gains speed and does it all over again.

Have a forgotten to do something when re-installing her?

L NAV is fine and even when I take her off V NAN, she does her own thing.  I guess like many ladies...

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank in advance.

Do you have an elevator trim axis on your yoke (of the roll wheel type - not buttons)?

Thank you for your prompt reply Kyle.

Not that I know of.  Forgetting to do something when re-installing that is.

It is probably something basic and obvious I'm over looking.  Frustrating...

You're welcome David.  That's the outlook to have when troubleshooting ("what am I causing?"), though it's no less frustrating.

I'd have a look at your joystick axes in the FS Controls.  Ensure there's no trim axis assigned to something random.  If there is, remove it.  If you want trim, use a trim up/down button pair.  That way, when the AP kicks on, it's not fighting a physical axis out there somewhere.

From there, it's just evaluating your practices:

  • To be honest, I lot of people engage the F/Ds and AP modes and forget to hit CMD after departure.  You'd be surprised how often you see that here.  I still don't understand how you miss that, but a lot of people do.
  • Ensure you have the proper mode selected on the MCP.
  • I can't think of other things at the moment, but we'll call this one "etc."

If you could post a screenshot, that might help.  Of note: the MCP, FMA and VNAV climb page would help.

Thanks Kyle.

I'll get you some screen shots over the weekend.

Funny thing here is, I've been flying this bird since she came out.  I did a re-install once and the something happened.

It was months before I got her to fly right.

And to the best of my knowledge, I haven't done anything different.  I've now uninstalled and reinstalled and done test flights four times hoping the V NAV behaves but... no joy thus far.

Thanks for your suggestions.  I'll be in touch either way.

Best regards.

On another note.  It's not just the V NAV.  Its also when out of V NAV mode the climb rate is of no interest to the altitude she wants to be at and hove fast a rate she wants to get there.

Good times....

Best regards.

Hi Kyle.

I have some snaps in a folder for you to examine however, I can't seem to figure out how to attach them to this forum.

Can you please guide me through this one also....

Best regards.

Gotta love the complexity of computers!  Try this: http://forum.avsim.net/tutorials/article/16-how-to-include-pictures-in-your-posts/

If you need clarification, let me know!
