so I'm thinking of ugrading my processor from an I52500k to the 3770k. I currently have the I5 overclocked to 4.5 which gives me pretty good fsx performance. My question is, do I have to delidd that 3770k to achieve 4.5 ghz overclock? I am running an air-cooled setup.

What's the purpose of the upgrade from 2500K to 3770K? Performance improvement from the CPU change alone won't improve game performance all that much.

 

As for reaching 4.5Ghz on a 3770K on air, that's very achievable without a delid. What's your cooler?

The cooler is an thermatake frio, thought maybe i would see a better performance with the ivy bridge processor. Maybe i will upgrade my gpu.

Why upgrade at all?

 

I can understand the upgrade to a newer (DX11) GPU if you were contemplating moving to/acquiring P3D V2.0.  Otherwise spend your hard earned on aircraft/airports/utilities instead of chasing a couple of extra FPS. Those can often be obtained by the simple expedient of using 512 x 512 clouds instead of their 1024 equivalent and, frankly, you'll struggle to tell the difference.

I'm guessing you will see a 10-15% improvement as it's a faster architecture. It's entirely up to you if you see that as worth it. You make the decision.

 

Haswell will give you more like a 20% increase in performance.

 

As for de-lidding, no, you don't need to delid for 4.5 GHz. Most 3770K's can achieve 4.6 without de-lidding. Some can achieve 4.7.

 

Not mine, mine needs high voltage, so 4.6 is the max for me. For me, 4.6 is the thermal threshold, where the TIM under the IHS starts to act more like an insulator than conductor.

Temps depend on voltage much more than actual clock speed. If your particular CPU needs a high voltage to reach your target clock speed, you will need a good cooler and/or delid. If you have a "good" CPU that doesn't need a very high voltage to reach your target clock speed, temps will not be a problem.

I wouldn't spend the money on that. Get the 47xx haswell instead.

 

I've got a 2500k@4.4, and not planning on upgrade for a while. It's still an excellent CPU!

Couldnt go with the haswell , dont want to upgrade the motherboard. Bought the i73770k, and though the 2500 k was a beast, things seem alot smoother with the new cpu on my system. Im not after fps, just a smooth experience.
