Has anyone tried Drzewiecki grass?

Recommended Posts

I know, I live in Colorado. But, no, it's not dope.  Of course, I meant Medical Dope.

Here's the link to the website: http://www.drzewiecki-design.net/prodDD_GrassX.htm

It looks pretty good.

Best regards,

Bill

A 4096 detail1 is just asking for OOMs..  Default is 128x128, FTX Aero detail1's only push it to 1024x1024.. I can't see the benefit of 4096 detail1 except to take screenshots with..

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of.  Thanks for the response.

Totally agree with Bill (Styckx)...... 4096 grass?! ....... this obsession with high resolution is bonkers.   There is no need whatsoever to have 4096 grass.    When OOMs are the biggest problem (threat) that FSX has, why on earth make all grass in the sim 4096.....

I love Drzwiecki's sceneries, but this idea is just baaaaad!

EDIT:       I posted above, believing this product to be payware, but fair enough it is freeware so at least people lose nothing in trying it.           but..... good luck with that!

I might have tried some Drzewiecki grass back in the 70's when I lived in California. My memory of those days is somewhat (ahem ) "fuzzy" :)

Regardless if its 4096, if you run 1024 or 2048 texture res, wont the grass texture simply display at that lower res, thus negating any performance penalties?

I agree with Bill and Dave... / Marc, sure, you can have as many 4096 textures as you like but they will only be displayed at whatever your TextureMaxLoad is set at in the FSX cfg. However, if you run your TML higher than 1024 to take advantage of things like HD clouds in REX or some of the newer HD airports then that's when the additional 4096 grass textures will be an unnecessary load on your rig.

Yeah I'd say that's right Marc, but as well as negating the performance penalty, you'd also be negating the HD of the grass.... making the whole exercise a bit pointless!

Could be worth a try though maybe     - perhaps even limited to 1024, their grass texture will look better.

Actually just because your TML is 2048, FSX still has to deal with the 4096 texture regardless. Nothing changes the fact it's still a 4096 texture.  You will get hit with the extra overhead weather FSX displays it as 2048 or 4096..

edit

I cant imagine them releasing this if It didnt do absolutely anything at all except place an extra load on the system.

They auto back up your files in the installer so its free and reversible. Not one to knock back good grass I will give it shot

Higher res means more real.  Certainly don't understand the obsession with less detail...

I see no problem with having it as an option. If you don't want to use it, you don't have to. Perhaps there are some that don't often fly around memory-intensive scenery/areas who wouldn't mind having high resolution grass.

I'm willing to try any kind of freeware, but I wish this didn't have an installer. If it's just a few textures I don't see why this couldn't be dispersed in file form. That's one reason I like avsim library freeware, they usually require manual installation so you know exactly what files are going where and can back them up if need be. It's always a question of "did the developer leave me a back-track method?" when using installers and sometimes they simply don't. In the case of textures, the installer would need to create backups. There's probably an uninstall option here with the grass, but I'm not certain, and I really don't feel like repairing the entire installation to replace a handful of grass textures that may or may not cause performance issues (i'm leaning toward 'may' right now).
