How much VRAM does P3D v2 use on your system ?

Recommended Posts

Questions :

  1. what graphics card ? How much VRAM ?
  2. resolution ? ( single, dual or triple monitor )
  3. shadows on / off ?
  4. other detailed settings ?

Just to get a very good idea  what one can expect

I have an ATi Sapphire HD7950 with 3Gb VRAM. Running at 1900x1200 with all options maxed apart from shadows, I can comfortably maintain smooth flight over just about anywhere. It's matched with an overclocked i5 2500K @4.7GHz, and I find the CPU is normally maxed on all cores, plus the GPU is I'm the mid 90's mostly with 2.6 to 2.9Gb of VRAM used. Never had an OOM yet.

My last flight in p3d v2 used around 3.5gb of the 4gb on my 680 gtx. In fairness that's over three screens at a resolution of 6000 x 1080. Gpu usage though is almost constantly at 99%. That's just due to shadows being enabled. The same settings at just 1920 x 1080 sees the gpu sit nicely at 60 to 70%.

Thanks everyone,

To compare : my 3 monitor setup using GTX680 SLI shows 900-935 mb with FSX in 5850x1050 resolution,...

So P3D really is way better in GPU use.

In FSX my three monitors running in almost the same resolution as yours will just get above 1GB with settings that give good performance. In P3D I've had it get to 2.6 with settings that are flyable on my system. I have a 3GB AMD card.

I have a single 1920x1080 monitor and GTX680 4GB, and the last time I checked my overhead was approx 2.10GB.

Shadows set to Med cast/recieve internal/external, simobjects, terrain.

Water/Reflection set to Ultra and all checked, ultra tesselation.

Tex res 1024, LOD 4.5

Autogen Density set to Dense

With 4096 textures and add-ons I hit 3.6GB VRAM, 2048 I'm hitting 3.2GB VRAM -- clouds/weather has an impact as does distance.

I did get one OOM, but it was NYX (no surprise there) and JFK2 and rex and FTX and me changing settings frequently while flying.

What I've noticed is that all the City X series (not MSE ones but Aerosoft) don't look very good and seem to induce an fps hit along with heavy VAS (not VRAM) usage ... so I'm guess these City X series are using FS9 type textures/objects?  The cities in P3DV2 actually look much better without City X ... maybe it's FTX helping out there.

I am noticing that too, besides the ability of rendering more autogen, I find default building quality to look much better globaly in P3Dv2 vs FSX. Not sure why.

I measure and show the values in flight on screen with EVGA Precision X tool. It's a very nice tool to adjust and monitor the GPU. Google may help you to find it.

Ok lame I know:

GTX 780

I run three 27" - I do not look at my VRAM usage and roll with whatever look best and smoothest.

While I like to tweak with overclocking I stopped tweaking with sims it was too distracting. If I OOM I dial something back until I don't anymore.

Hehe not even sure what my sliders are set at anymore.

Single monitor 2560 x 1600.

what tool's being used to measure this?

All kinds of different tools from GPU-Z to Process Explorer (it'll show dedicated GPU mem vs. GPU system mem) to Windows 7 gadgets and a various other applications that will even do it (like C4D, Adobe - require a refresh).  Process Explorer - System Info does the best job IMHO.

VRAM usage from FSDT JFK2, bad weather.

P3DV2JFK1.jpg

Linked the image because of AVSIM image size rules, but I think it's important to see full size image with fps counter also as it will represent all that is present relative to VRAM ... Dusk setting which is usually pretty intensive on resources.

Rob.

EDIT: this is not "per process" ... all engines selected ... but it's the only GPU process (other than Desktop) that is running.
