Anyone using an Ultra HDTV/4K TV with FSX?

Recommended Posts

I'm really intrigued by the prospect of using a large screen Ultra HDTV (3840 X 2160) as my screen for FSX. Several models became 'well priced' at Thanksgiving including three models of Seiki's budget 4K TVs each at  less than $1000 US.

Has anyone tried on of these with FSX, and in particular, an NVIDIA card? Can Windows/NVIDIA drive this resolution using HDMI? Do tell of your experiences!

No idea. I suppose FSX could run at that res.

My main question is why would anyone buy that for a tv? Blu ray won't output past 1080 right? HD local broadcasts are still only 1080 too right?

These are currently targeted for gaming AFAIK, but Sony is working on content.

I think using one of the 55" would be killer for FSX!  :Drooling:  NVidia 600 & 700 series with current drivers can support that resolution - IF the video card could keep up (4 x current HDTV for number of pixels).

Your FOV might not expand bigtime ( but will  by about +33%) , but its most noticeable improvements are the fonts which  are much much sharper and everything has more definition .... clarity ...crispiness.

I'm comparing this to my 3600 x 1920 resolution = through 3xportraits/DELLs in eyefinity.

With the new HDs you would not have the bezels...

FPS does take a hit, about 33% decrease but worth it for immersion.

FPS does take a hit, about 33% decrease

Glad to see this thread get bumped Peppy.

So, your 33% decrease is relative to what? What's your GPU utilization look like? This is one of my major concerns and I don't know if there's a way to determine expected performance other than 'try it and see'. (Could be an expensive experiment!)

With your setup, you're trying to drive ~6.9M pixels. A 4K HDTV is ~8.3M pixels - so you're in the ballpark for sure! I guess my question is, all else being equal, does the load on the GPU scale linearly with the number of pixels? If my GTX 680 sits at 40% utilization driving a regular HDTV, would it require 160% to maintain the same performance with a 4K HDTV? Obviously, that's not possible, so if the assumption were true, my frame rates should suffer by 37.5% and my GPU would run flat out  (Not sure if I did the math right, but you get the idea).

Did you make the plunge? I'm looking closely at the Seiki or TCL 50-inch 4K to replace my triple 25" monitors (going from 3 to 1 monitor). Curious if you pulled the trigger and your results.

Nope. This is too expensive an undertaking for me to be an early adopter. Not only the cost of a 4K HDTV but possible (likely?!) and new or additional GPU to drive it. I'll have to read about other people's successes with FSX before I make a move.

AFAIK these only do 4K at 30Hz refresh rate.

That could be headache inducing.

Its not the 4K that only does 30Hz its the graphics card drivers

The terrain textures can look a bit 'stretched' with my 3XDELL, whereas the buildings and VC and models are nicer.

33% is a max (maybe more?) loss, sometimes its only 12% or so depending on clouds/airport/AI

It is actually a hardware combination of both TV and videocard to get the HDMI running at 60Hz. The 4K TV needs to have at least an HDMI port with the specification HDMI 2.0 to handle 60HZ input. The videocard as well. I bought on November 2014 a Toshiba LED TV UHD 58L8400 58in 4K at costco.ca for $1200, The TV has a one 60HZ HDMI Port and three HDMI pors at 30Hz. The nvidia video card has also HDMI ver 2.0 to run at 60Hz. I am running FSX with an nvidia videocard Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 G1 - at 3840x2160 at 60HZ using the HDMI port. FSX Runs very well. The detail of the aircraft depends on the source. Microsoft's stock planes look good. If it is a freebe it may either look good or bad depending. If the aircraft is payware it will look just awesome. With my setup I am seating almost three feet from the TV and sometimes I have to walk towards the TV to see the FSX menu because of the tiny fonts of the FSX menu. I am trying to figure out how to attach/upload a couple of pics. Jose.

Provided you GPU is strong enough you shouldn't take an FPS hit. I don't take one when I switch from 1920x1080 to 2560x1440 in FS and only a very minor one in GTA V
