snow covered ground

Again, I seem to have offended you Sir.  I have reread my posts closely and nowhere do I ever use the word "suck".  I did use the words "generally crappy" because IM (not so) HO and the opinions of many others the seasonal depictions in FSX are generally agreed to be somewhat wanting and some might even say "crappy". But suck?  Never mentioned in any of my posts in this thread, although I many have indeed used that term somewhere else in the past.

Are you one of the original programmers of FSX?  You seem overly invested in trying to make others (me at least) bend to your will as to the level of programming excellence used in developing the FSX program.

"Generally crappy" and "suck" (used as an adjective) is very much in the same ballpark in my dictionary. I would have accepted "somewhat wanting".

I am neither an original programmer of FSX nor am I in any way affiliated with MS. I am just sick of seeing that a seven year old piece of software built upon even older software still receives strongly worded terms for not doing this or that differently. It's like reading a history book while expecting a different outcome and then complaining about it.

Bjoern please calm down! To me, "generally crappy" does not sound like abusive language.  However, Dan apologized thinking he did offend you and your answer shows that maybe you had a bad day and needed to "release some steam".  So, have a good german beer my friend, relax and all will be well.

Just what is your problem ? And I don't mean with Dan, I mean in general, what is your deal ?

This is exactly the kind of pot-stirring we could do with a whole lot less of around here.

The seasonal representations in the sim are crap. Deal with it.

You "would have accepted"...get over yourself...seriously.

Just to reiterate: there's a couple things that affect season depiction.

First, there are only 5 texture sets, so that's the most variation you can get without substituting textures.

Second, WRT terrain, the granularity of the horizontal resolution, which is QMID 15 in FSX (approx 1km).

Third, the number of seasonal maps, which is 12.

Fourth, the way 3d objects are designed (whether and how they respond to seasonal changes).

Fifth, the presence of "snow" in the weather depiction.

Note that IRL elevation plays a major role in seasonal appearance, but there is nothing in FSX to take account of that, except snow/ice landclass which can create permanent snow (for example on mountain peaks).

Just copy all textures containing *b2wi* (normal winter), place them in a temporary folder and rename them to *b2hw* (heavy winter). Then copy them back to your texture folder. No more snow in ANY temperate region, however.

Sascha

I did that, and there are still some winter textures in FSX (FTXG). So I copied and renamed ALL *wi* to *hw* and voilla no more ice age! There are still snowy trees, but that is even better for a cold winter look without snow if you ask me. :)

Good on you! I forgot all about 3rd party addons.

If the FS winter textures are changed with those without snow, all addon airports will look ugly, because they have the winter snowy textures and thus you will get a snowy square area surrounded by green terrain...

If you've got a better idea how to solve the transitions between seasons WITHOUT unnecessarily increasing the number of texture sets used, I'm very glad to hear it.

Not for implementation into FSX or P3D, of course, but to judge how much of a grasp you have of the tradeoffs necessary between accurate, but efficient seasonal terrain generation.

No, but gaining a bit more understanding of the inner workings of a flight simulator could help.

The depiction of seasons does not "suck", it simply adheres to limitations imposed by available computing power. If ACES could have done it any better within the timeframe spent on FSX, they bloody well would have. Thus, a little appreciation for what there is can't hurt.

Seriously bad attitude.

@ Dan (Woodhick)   - don't be under any illusion that you said anything wrong to justify or deserve this guy's cranky attitude.

He just does this sometimes.

No, I wasn't under any impression after my first response to him other than that he was/is a complete troll.  But thanks Dave

A final thought here:

I may not be able to define pornography, but I know it when I see it.

I may not know art, but I know what I like.

I may not know poor programming, but I know it when I see that too.

...and I may not know what the heck you're talking about, but I'll support your right to say it !

Not at all.  Having fun is what flight simming should be about, IMHO

I'm not sure if that was supposed to make me chuckle but it did

I agree too
