Windows 7 vs WIndows 8 - Use WIndows 8

I've recently upgraded my OS from Windows 7 to windows 8.1 and it seems to have bumped my frame rate up to over 30fps from 20fps at best if lucky (1920x1080).  This is on a G860 dual core 3.0 GHZ CPU and old GTX 460 1GB graphics card so basically a PC that cost very very little to put together.  I was looking at an upgraded CPU and GPU but seems no point.  Note sure why the performance has changed so much for the better yet still experimenting.

But was the jump from going to windows 8 or because of a clean OS install?

But Windows 8 doesn't have Aero, which means no functioning V-Sync. And also, the joystick disconnection issues.

 

Unless the application supports DirectX 11.1, Windows 8 should barely provide a boost (it's only a bit lighter compared to Windows 7).

Even if I ran FSX on Windows 7 with Aero Basic, my performance was still no where near what I can get in 8, and with very minimal tweaking. I think the OS overall is better optimized, so it uses less resources that can now be dedicated to other applications. However, the performance improvement for those running 8 seems to vary. Some seem to have a significant improvement, while others have a very minor improvement, if not none at all.

Something is a lot better optimised in windows 8 by the looks of things.  My windows 7 install was very minimal so I don't think its anything to do with clean install.  I have read that the scheduler is much improved in Windows 8 which might explain how it has improved performance.  An improvement I found in FSX on WIndows 7 was to give it 100% of one of the cores, made a massive difference in windows 7 on FSX.

V-sync works fine in Prepar3D v2 running on Windows 8.1. In Windows 8, Desktop Window Manager (DWM) is always ON and is used to compose the desktop just like with Windows 7.

 

I've been running Prepar3D v2 on clean installs of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 and Windows 8.1 Pro 64 (fresh install from an ISO, not the upgrade from the Microsoft's site) and I see no reason to go back to Windows 7.

Not true - vsync works fine in 8.1.
