3 monitors: which views to use

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

i want to use 3 screens to run fsx, with the two side screens to show side views of the cockpit and the center view to show to forward view. In case i don't need to see the cockpt itself (separate hardware or screens to display gauges, pannel, mcp, ...), which views do i need to use to make this happen?

I have a GTX680 4GB videocard.

Regards

My goal is to have as much peripheral view as possible (as in a real plane).

Regards

Depends, are you running FS in full screen or windowed? I use three but the side two are for popups/Acars/SB. I only run P3D on my main screen at 2560x1600. I've found adding two undocked views really drags my fps down to an unusable point.

GTX690 on my machine.

Hi,

I run a triple monitor setup at 5760x1200 via surround and V/C. I use 2D popup panels (when needed) for aft overhead, overhead, pedestal, FMC via buttons on my yoke and close them when I'm done. Then its back to the V/C.

I am not sure how to do it full screen unless you run something like triple head to go and use 3 monitors as 1.

Hi,

It depends on your hardware. I have a GTX 690 that is capable of running my three monitors full screen via surround. Prior to me purchasing the GTX690 I used the TH2Go Digital, but it's max resolution was lower than the 690 so I don't use the TH2Go anymore.

Just looked at your PC setup, you have a GTX690, so you don't need a TH2Go, just connect the three monitors to your GTX690 and run via surround.

 Hi Mike,

My two outer screens are at 1920x1080 vs my main is 2560x1600. I use windowed which really suits me well, I was referring to the OP's post about how to do it in full screen. But now that I think of it, you can use surround or the ATI offering which I think is Eyefinity?

i have nvidia so it is surround. But what i mean by view is, VC view or cockpit view, ... just to have to outside view without panel etc.

Also the problem i have if i undock panel to another screen, whenever i save and reload the flight the panels are back in the original place.

I tought that when saving the flight, the panels would stay in the same place and you could load it as a default flight each time...

Also keep in mind all three monitors must be the same resolution and refresh rate. I found it best when I did mine was to purchase three exact monitors.

I'm also assuming you really want one large view with three monitors. Not three monitors with popups on them.

I've had mines running for some time so my setup is old school. I have two GTX460 running in SLI mode and I turned surround video on within graphic properties. Since I'm using nvidia...you'll want to read up on surround video...it's really cool.

Panels do not save.

There's a VC cockpit view and there's a outside view...normally hitting F10. I find that this doesn't work at all using surround video...without adjusting panel sizes, because they're are by default not setup for your newer larger resolution.

Hi,

If you are undocking 2D panels and want them to stay where you put them (a select monitor) and/or alter their size, you will have to edit your panel.cfg file. I had to do this for all my 2D panels so they show correctly and on the correct monitor.

To give you an idea on what I'm talking about, take a look at my FSX PMDG 737 panel.cfg file. Now compare this with PMDG's original. You will see changes in size and position. Also keep in mind this is not a complete panel.cfg file, it just has the 2d areas, some edited some not.

If you have a single large monitor, consider multiple views on one screen!

The pic shows FS9 "PMDG 747 aloft near Vancouver" running on my old 1.8 Ghz PC, with triple views - LFwd,Fwd,RFwd - plus the 1st officer's panel and all popups!

Flew OK except the 17" LCD monitor was just too small to be practical. Should work not badly with a screen in the 37-40" range.

(Black squares are monitors 2 & 3 of my triple mon config- not in use for this experiment. Make sure each view occupies exactly one third of the screen width.

Double windscreen post is caused by displaying both Captain & 1st Officer views- just curiosity to see if it could be done- developers please note!)

(As a side note, the Consumer Electronics show this year displayed a very large flat screen that bends itself into a curved screen at the touch of a button! Bring MONEY!)

You could have problems using Surround for the Cockpit: Cockpit View (i.e. without the VC showing).

Depending on the plane I often get the mouse busy cursor come on

when bringing up the Cockpit View on my Surround system.

The sim then grinds down to a jerky super low frame rate.

You might be better keeping the monitors as three separate ones and creating separate aligned views for each one.

The plus to this is you will get much less distortion of the outer views for the same field of view, as compared to Surround.

The downside is that three separate views is more graphically demanding than one Surround view.

Also the horizon will not be straight when you bank or climb/dive.

i have nvidia so it is surround.

You could have problems using Surround for the Cockpit: Cockpit View (i.e. without the VC showing).

You might be better keeping the monitors as three separate ones and creating separate aligned views for each one.

Ooops.. just realised that the VC returns when you look left/right when in the Cockpit View.

One work-around might be to go back to the VC view and shift the eyepoint way forward outside the cockpit, just in front of the plane's nose.

Depending on the plane the change in perspective might not be a problem.
