January 7, 200521 yr "That guy Greg knows his stuff and you can trust what he says"Thanks Eric! :-beerchug This is how my (sys specs in sig) latencies are configured:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/102860.jpgIt will do no good to "give" more latency to one or more devices. The goal is to balance the system... give them all an equal shot at the PCI bus. 32 clks works just fine.Cheers,Greg
January 7, 200521 yr I was surprised to find I hadn't set the latency, or maybe I had tried with the Powerstrip utility vs. the one in the link. I found both my card and my modem set to 248. I lowered both to 64.FPS didn't change, I didn't expect it would. But I truly find an increase in smoothness--someone said lack of "micro stutters" and that's what I feel I gained. Does it make a difference? Put it this way--on final I found in the past that once my fps dipped below 20, I could really tell. Tonight I was on final into KOAK and it was smooth throughout. I was surprised to see upon landing that the fps counter was 18-19. That's no different than a normal approach would be from that direction with several buildings in view, but the fact that I didn't notice is a huge difference.I'd say this tip is a keeper, along with this nifty utility. It's given my P3/800 a few more weeks. I'm not one for Snake Oil either :)-John
January 7, 200521 yr Author Greg,As you can see with the attached image, is it safe to reduce those Intel ones to 32 from the 192 they were at?http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/102861.jpg Eric
January 7, 200521 yr "is it safe to reduce those Intel ones to 32 from the 192 they were at?"Should be fine, Eric. I run everything at 32. On numerous systems ... for years now.How did your flight to KSFO go (you mentioned the flight last night)? Did you notice any difference?GregP.S. Eric, I notice you have the Creative Firewire active on your system... are you using it? If not you might think about disabling it on XP's Device Manager and then giving it 0 latency. If it's not being used why have it using any resources at all? Cheers.
January 7, 200521 yr Author Smooth as silk..was great! Thanks for the info on the intel stuff! They should give you your own forum for tech support on computers! What is it under (firewire) you think in the Device Manager...I cannot seem to locate it? Eric
January 7, 200521 yr <>Dunno. I'm a Turtle Beach sort of a guy. Perhaps someone more familiar with Creative can assist.Greg
January 7, 200521 yr Thank's Harry! 3d Mark 03 went up 2000 points, Off to try CF9 :-) http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=3557168:-) Edit, also went to latest Radion Driver tho.
January 7, 200521 yr DavidI've downloaded both the older and the new versions of this utility, but I get an error each time I try to run the .exe after unzipping the contents. (Same 'start' error on both versions)Does the utility have to be installed in a particular place to run?ThanksToni.
January 7, 200521 yr I've installed version 2 of LtcyCfg and reduced my vid cards latency from 248 to 64. It does seem to make the sim smoother but now, when I boot up I get a small error box pop up to say something like 'Error loading the driver'. Doesnt give any more info, but sounds a bit ominous. Anyone else get this?Bud
January 7, 200521 yr I haven't received it--I've done about four boots since using the utility.I also came up with more fps observations.Initially, although smoother I didn't see any fps improvement. But I actually have, but it depends on the complexity of the surrounding scenery. If the scenery is fairly simple, there's only an improvement in smoothness. But if the scenery is complex, I've seen about a 20 pct improvement in fps. It almost seems that the more "challenge" the sim is under, the greater the improvement. The most significant improvement I saw was sitting on rwy 1R in SFO. With Autogen and AI off, but everything else maxed and resolution at 800x600x32 (a concession my slow system has forced me to live with), my fps has gone from about 20 looking left towards the terminal to 24.My working theory is that setting the latency lower makes it easier for the other periphs to do their work, including the Hard Drive. I've always maintained that fetching data from the hard drive seemed to conincide with most of the stutters people observe. More interesting to note is that everything on my desktop seems a tad faster and smoother, from opening and closing windows to loading of programs. I also noted my system was running cooler, with a MB temp of 27C and a cpu temp of 35C vs. about 29/39.As I noted in a post above, I'm not much into snake oils, but I find the observations regarding this tweak very interesting. One or two have noted no improvement--I can only suggest they have well optimized systems and matched components.-John
January 7, 200521 yr My videocard was using 255 - the others were using 32 or 16.So I changed videocard to 32 and here are the results3DMark 2001: From 24,558 to 24,588, 0.1% improvement3DMark 03: From 11,603 to 11,894, 2.5% improvement3DMark 05: From 5549 to 5575, 0.5% improvementAs far as FS goes, no real difference. Maybe <.5 FPS but it's hard to say as it's very hard to keep all factors the same in this sim.Never experienced any "stutters" on my system either before or after the tweak. So, no 100% improvement for me, no 49,000 3DMarks and no 60 FPS constantly in FS9 from changing one solitary setting. The search for the "holy grail" of tweaks goes on. Now what if I stand on my head while playing FS - I think that would help FPS a lot :-lol -

I tried this, and my 69 fps was still 69 fps :)I am curious if there's any relationship between system specs, O/S, and whether or not improvement is seen? I suspect that the latency doesn't improve anything unless one or more of the other peripherals is "challenged" by another peripherals high latency setting. What surprised me was that my modem's latency setting was also 248.-John
January 7, 200521 yr "I am curious if there's any relationship between system specs, O/S, and whether or not improvement is seen?"Probably - that's the thing with "tweaks" - while one tweak may do wonders for user A, user B notices no difference at all and user C gets worse performance and CTD's. User D is busy flying and user E is having a birthday party. -
January 7, 200521 yr I've applied this latency config (32 clks) to more than 4 dozen computers over the years... numerus OS from win95 (1) thru 98 (all versions), ME, 2000, and XP (Home and Pro). I've found it not to be OS dependant. It is hardware dependant. Specifically, those motherboards using the Northbridge/Southbridge config where the bus is more "convoluted" than the recent AMD 64 systems that do not use a NB/SB config. The bus on these newer systems is much more effecient.JimmiG, I wonder if you had a chance to apply this tweak to your previous AMD 210o system? I'd be willing to bet you'd see a difference there. Not surprised you don't see anyhting on your new Shuttle system.Regards,Greg
January 7, 200521 yr The only tweak I have done is to change my vid card to 32, everything else still at what it was. Will it make it even that much better if I force 32 on everything else? I will go get the latest version of the tweak as Im using the older one right now. I'm seeing the same thing as JohnCi, no big improvement other than smoothness, but slight fps increases in the normally challenged situations. Im seeing about a 5-10% average improvement in the high density and AI airports. Its defintely smoother, I used to sit and watch the fps counter jump all over the place, now its highs and lows are much closer than before. Thats the first thing I noticed. I have a P4 2.8 running at 3.0 ghz on a slightly older Gigabyte board with an Intel 845 chipset. Radeon 9800 pro, 7200 rpm WD 80 gig drive, 1G of PC2100 DDR, and an Audigy 2. Also using Win XP home, clean, defragged system with about 15 services running. Im locked now at about 30, before was at 25. its smoother at this than it was at 25 with this tweak!Hornit
