January 17, 201412 yr I decided to try the cold and dark panel state tonight and when I switched to the external view I could still hear the APU running even when it was off. I waited for a couple of minutes but still could hear it. I decided to power up the plane and then power it down again (including turning the APU on and then off), but again it sounded like the APU was running from the external view even after a couple of minutes. The APU inlet door started to close the second I turned the APU off, but a sound was still being created...this can't be right. Is it a known bug by chance? Any suggestions? January 17, 201412 yr I encounter this phenomenon with quite a few aircraft, it's almost at random. Usually tapping the 'Q' key twice does the trick. 'Q' is used to mute FSX sounds but I guess in this case, it also resets the sound output since I've had a 100% success rate with it.
January 17, 201412 yr Once you shut down the APU you will still hear it for a minute or 2 while it winds down and cools off. Now if you shut it down and the "APU COOLDOWN" message on EICAS extinguishes and you still hear the APU then you do have a problem. Thanks, Joel Joel The Cold and Dark panel state has some known bugs or issues that can lead to some funny stuff. If you insist on using it, create your own by loading the flight with SHORT or LONG, and then shutting everything down and closing the dorrs (doors), then save this state. As many will tell you, very few pilots come across a cold and dark airplane on the line. I realize it is more fun setting up a cold and dark plane though! One other note, the default FSX AI Aircraft sound is almost like an APU. Try turning off AI and see if it goes away? Wes EDIT: That moment when you realize you spelt doors as dorrs... Wes Meyer

Not even the short panel state is a good base to start with, apparently, at least according to a post by someone from PMDG I remember reading last week. Nothing is really known and that's why I am disappointed the patch is not out yet.
January 17, 201412 yr I just tried the long panel state now, and it seems the APU is permanently running, yet never actually turns on. I see it is running in the hydraulic synoptic yet I don't see "APU RUNNING" on the upper eicas and when disconnecting ground power it completely shuts the airplane down. So the APU is stuck on for some reason.
January 17, 201412 yr Author Unless there is something wrong with my setup, there must be a bug with the COLD AND DARK panel state. I did some experiments and the APU works normal when the cold and dark setting is not applied, but when it is applied and everything turns off you can still hear it from the external view. Moving forward, when I turn everything on in the cockpit from this state (APU, etc.) and then turn the APU off, the APU sound still can be heard and there is no APU cooling down shown on the EICAS. But, moving to the external view the APU inlet door is closed. When you switch the APU off, it will cool down for some minutes. It will do this when not starting from the cold and dark state, but as stated above this does not seem to occur when switching the APU on, letting it run, and then turning it off from a cold and dark state setup. I encounter this phenomenon with quite a few aircraft, it's almost at random. Usually tapping the 'Q' key twice does the trick. 'Q' is used to mute FSX sounds but I guess in this case, it also resets the sound output since I've had a 100% success rate with it. Tried this but doesn't work. Anyone else seeing this same thing? Might need to be a fix included in the patch that comes out. Joel Joel Matey: I7 7700k @4.6 I 16GB Ram I Geforce 1080 I 500 GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD I Hitachi 2 TB standard drive I Windows 10.
January 18, 201412 yr Are you sure you're not mistaking that sound for the sound of the Hydraulics?? Jimmy Nestor
January 18, 201412 yr Author Are you sure you're not mistaking that sound for the sound of the Hydraulics?? No, I had my hydraulics turned off. Its definitely the APU sound. I'll maybe see if I can post a video up of it. Joel Matey: I7 7700k @4.6 I 16GB Ram I Geforce 1080 I 500 GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD I Hitachi 2 TB standard drive I Windows 10.
