January 21, 201412 yr Such a shame that photoscenery doesn't look as good as it did in FSX due to the limited lod setting of 6.5, is there any way around this or perhaps could LM remove the cap so that we can have sharper textures further out when flying with photoscenery? Seems like I'll have to fly with default textures for the time being until LM can fix the LOD cap. January 22, 201412 yr You can manually edit the LOD setting though, or are you saying that doing that makes no difference?
January 22, 201412 yr Author The LOD setting is capped at 6.5, so even if you edit the cfg file and put like 12, it will still be set at 6.5. Really wish they can uncap it and allow us to change the settings ourselves. It makes photoscenery look bad. January 22, 201412 yr Is it really so much different? It's pretty significant to my eyes, but to each his/her own (think I posted some comparison screenshots a while back). It's a combination of AA/AF and the LOD_RADIUS restricted to 6.5 (higher values are not used, defaults to max of 6.5 per LM). But given current VAS usage issues (which are being addressed) higher LOD_RADIUS will only increase the OOM frequency and exaggerate the 32bit address space problem. Ironically, most Photo scenery has no autogen so VAS usage isn't actually as bad as the current AutoGen system ... it would be nice if they would remove the LOD_RADIUS restriction ... if they did, I'd probably use Photo real more in P3DV2 ... as it stands now I don't use photo real much. IMHO, photo real Arizona, Grand Canyon are far far better looking that FTX Global ... so it would be nice to have that choice back.
January 22, 201412 yr Commercial Member it would be nice if they would remove the LOD_RADIUS restriction Rob, Do you know if this feature request has been made on the LM forum? BTW, I agree that this would be nice. I just did a flight in the mountains in Washington last night and I have to say that it was an inspiring experience. REX AccuSeason Developer REX Simulations
January 22, 201412 yr Do you know if this feature request has been made on the LM forum? I think it has been brought up before to LM, not sure exactly how it was received. The higher resolution you run the move obvious LOD restriction becomes (visually) ... but to be honest, this is something that'll probably just have to wait for a 64bit code path ... VAS is already pretty stretched out as is.

January 24, 201412 yr I've actually been enjoying the photoscenery appearance in p3d but haven't compared directly with fsx. Perhaps it's because I fly with opus, which does a good job of limiting visibility realistically in the sim - so I don't notice the less sharp textures in the distance. Overall, with Rex 4 and opus along with the photoscenery I'm finding it more immersive than fsx by a fair margin - and it seems pretty smooth. I've got ftx global but am flying 90% photoreal. The main thing I miss is the ability of ultimate terrain to place lights over the photoscenery for dusk/dawn/night flying. I am finding that the level of immersion using photoreal content within P3D is also much better than FSX. It adds a depth to the experience that I have not seen before. January 24, 201412 yr Author Could you guys post screenshots of your photo scenery under P3D v2? I want compare it to what I'm seeing. For those of you who use Opus to limit the visibility, what setting are you using? I'd like to try the same thing to see if it can somehow realistically make photo scenery look better. January 24, 201412 yr Could you guys post screenshots of your photo scenery under P3D v2? Will do later tonight ... but I agree, if you set weather visibility to something less than unlimited (say 30-40mi) the photo scenery in P3DV2 looks good (the LOD_RADIUS is less important) and I feel more immersed ... but for those clear days with very good visibility FSX looks better IMHO. Also, FXAA on in P3DV2 tends to make photo scenery less "crisp".
January 24, 201412 yr Author Rob, thanks. I am noticing strange blurry textures when using photo scenery, it seems that the textures load in a bit late, not sure what's wrong or what I can do to fix the texture loading times. It's frustrating to see blurry textures load and then suddenly change to the crisper sharper textures. Sometimes the textures seem to load a bit late, i kind of have to look to the side of my plane before I see them change. January 24, 201412 yr it seems that the textures load in a bit late, not sure what's wrong or what I can do to fix the texture loading times. I sometimes get that problem also ... changing my Affinity setting helped reduce it some, but still present. But I think LM have addressed a few photo scenery issues so I'll revisit the photo scenery once the patch is released.
