In search of smoothness

Featured Replies

I have recently being experimenting with my config and finding ways to improve my experience in FSX, particularly getting things smooth. My usual config is one of using unlimited frames and capping using an external limiter to 60FPS which is my LCD monitors refresh rate 60hz, this results in fantastic smoothness but obviously achieving 60fps is a nightmare. Recently in many cases with aircraft like the PMDG 777 I just do not achieve 60FPS and everything grinds to a jittering mess but I have yet to see an occasion where I drop below 30 ever so I decided to experiment with using the Vsync 1/2 refresh feature to find extra smoothness at lower FPS figures, in my old config at 60FPS I had also been plagued with tearing which I just learnt to live with.

I have read many things about the Vsync set to 1/2 refresh trick yet when I turn this on FSX looks awful and stuttery yet locked solid on 30FPS constant. Using this setting is as though I am running my old 60 fps config whilst choosing to instead lock myself at 30fps which results in painful jittering performance, like you would see in a high performance demand scenario but this is with default scenery and aircraft. I achieve rock solid 30fps just to add, It does not fluctuate, it does not move in any shape or form but the simulation is not smooth at all. Now my question is, how should this setting be effectively setup properly? I wouldn't call my problem stuttering because I see stuttering as FPS fluctuating and therefore causing pauses, I do not get fluctuating FPS but rather things look like they are performing badly when they aren't?

To clarify further, in Inspector should I be setting VSync to 1/2 refresh and leaving every other setting alone? What about Triple buffering or Pre-Rendered frames to negate input lag? Should I also be locking my FPS in the game too or through the use of an external limiter at 30FPS? And finally, what about the FullScreenVsync tweak? Should this be 1 or 0? Any help on this would be great. My whole aim of this is to achieve smoothness at lower FPS, running my old setup trying to reach 60FPS is simply not possible with the higher demand aircraft and I have found myself deleting AI traffic just to try and achieve >40 FPS so that things are smooth.

I have attached an image of my existing Nvidia Inspector, any help would be fantastic!
