I wouldn't quite call that fact considering I live and work out in the Middle east. Back in the 80's & early 90's maybe. Not anymore.

I was there less than six months ago (Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan). Every Bazaar I walked into had dozens of stands with thousands of pirated copies of software and films. All of them. Everyone; every single last one. HN Governments don't do anything about it due to the poverty and income disparity amongst the population, regardless of whether they're a party to the WIPO Convention. "Not anymore" Pfft, give me a break.

Good luck attempting to get the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance in Iran, which is the primary governmental body relating to IP matters, to actually do anything about it.

Here are some factual numbers for ya. While the average global piracy rate is around 40%, 54+% is calculated in the ME and NA Region alone. Software piracy is a $54 billion dollar industry that contributes to these HN economies,

Fair enough mate, have never been to Kuwait or Saudi except in transit. As far as Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE is concerned piracy is being dealt with.   I have  been out here for nearly twenty five years.

Huge Shopping malls are now filled with major retailers like Virgin Megastores, they generate a massive amount of revenue. Governments are cracking down, I know of only one small store in my area that provides fake dvds, back in the 90's you could walk into a major supermarket and purchase a pirated movie.

When I was in Bahrain, UAE and Oman I never saw any pirated stuff.

Malaysia though..... wow. Shopping malls where there maybe every 4th or 5th shop (note I said shop, and not some guy with a suitcase on a table) sold all kinds of pirated movies, computer software, console games.

Nick

Yes. I think the administrators should delete any personal information of these guys. I do not think it is in the best interest for AVSIM to gain a witch-hunter reputation. Yes, they have attempted (horribly) to scam a relatively small hobby market, but that is no reason to witch hunt. All we can do is inform others of the website.

I say burn um at the stake. We gotta show crooks that this community isn't going to take this lying down. Your mentality is like if someone broke into my house I should just sit there and watch them take my stuff vs my mentality of getting my semi automatic 12 gauge confronting the bugler and adding a new trophy above my fireplace. You have to take a hard stance with crime if we still put people in racks and threw rotten food at them maybe crime wouldn't be so heavy humiliation is a great way of stopping crime lol.

Considering the fact that every bazaar you walk into in the Middle East has tens of thousands of pirated copies of movies, PC and consoles games, I'm fairly certain IP infringement isn't that big of a deal in Southwest Asia... Therefore, good luck trying to do anything about it.

The middle east is not in southwest Asia, neither is Iran...

Invaluable "contribution". Keep up the good work. In the meantime can you please enlighten us where the **** Iran and Middle East are - Antarctica maybe?

That is maybe your third post in this thread. The first thing you've "contributed" was to use the fake phone number from the whois to call the scammers in Iran. Any other "brilliant" ideas or geography lessons? Or is the sole intention of yours to blabber constantly on every thread you see?

That's pretty snarky and I suggest you pull back on the throttle a tad. You just succeeded in getting this thread set "at risk of closure".

I've missed the latest reincarnation of this thread, but is it still really actually seeking for money?

I do apologize, however, the level of ignorance in that post was too disconcerting not to reply. Therefore, I do hope you'll keep the topic open so the members here can communicate and exchange information concerning this scam.

Ah, my mistake. I thought I had read southeast Asia, a region I'm currently studying thoroughly. I was using my phone.

But is it actually seeking a credit card?

Gerry Howard

But is it actually seeking a credit card?

That is a bit nervy isn't it? Give us your credit card info - open the door to us draining your account and ruining your credit - and you'll get your purchase delivered later, . . . . . . . . . we promise! With one swoop they get your email address to sell and your credit info to abuse. I really hope there is not one single person in this world that falls for this scam. The only justice may be that they make so little off this that it ends up costing them more than they make. One can only hope!

Mel
