AI Flight into Terrain

Recommended Posts

Surely this issue has been addressed.... yet I cannot find any posts re: this topic.I have an AI regional commuter flight that leaves out of Ketchikan Int PAKT to Annette Island PANT.Upon following it, I find it is crashing into the mountains to the west of PAKT. Now, sometimes it manages to get through, but then will crash coming over the mountains on decent into PANT.An IFR flight plan as opposed to a VFR flight plan has some impact on this, but it is negligible. There must be some way around this. There are default AI traffic moving around mountainous areas all the time and seem to do ok.Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.Misty Moorings MeshFS9ThanksDarryl

Hi,Try using IFR flight plans, and lower the visibility to less than 3 miles. They might start using real approaches (if included in FS) and avoid the mountains. With better visibility they just do visual approaches and crash into mountains.Hope this helps,--Tom GibsonCal Classic Propliner Page: http://www.calclassic.comFreeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.comDrop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___

That Tom Gibson!, always giving the A.I.pilots the benefit of the doubt. My thoughts are that if they can't get in vfr when they can see the hills there's no way that ATC will vector them in right if they can't see the hills!! I take your point about going straight through the hills if they go visual but even so it's asking too much of the system to get fairly mad ATC to direct even madder A.I.pilots to get it right between them, imho!!I have screenshots of one of your A.I. Boeing 377s going missed at Juneau(one of many I imagine) and then narrowly avoiding the shrubbery on his way round again. In fact someone was awake on that run because it just squeaked over the hilltop on it's way out! It would be good to get into the A.I planes as they weave about, because even though I joke about them , when they land right they land nicely- down the centerline and on the numbers I guess and it would be helpful to see all that in close-up as it were, instead of just following them around.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/103432.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/103433.jpg

I tried 6 ways to Sunday to get AI to fly into and out of Bella Colla BC after doing some scenry for the airport. Doesn't matter if its IFR or VFR, they cant get into the valley even going about 70-80 kts. Even the small AI aircraft can't do it. I even put a 5 degree ILS aligned with the Valley to see if that might help. I have seen one or two actually make it but its rare and its a silly looking approach. On takeoff they get airborne nicely and just auger into the surrounding mountains. Luckily its far enough away so you dont see it! :) If your using 3rd party mesh it just gets worse, usually steeper and higher terrain with it so theres just no way. The AI isnt equipped to do it, period.Hornit

LOL!Yep, I'm an optimistic sort. There are indeed many airports that AI aircraft just can't use. I sometimes set myself up at Reno, NV and watch the AI aircraft auger into the side of the Sierra Nevada mountains as they try to head west. :)Take care,--Tom GibsonCal Classic Propliner Page: http://www.calclassic.comFreeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.comDrop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___
