Need FSX SDK

Recommended Posts

I have FSX Deluxe discs.  Somehow the FSX SDK is missing from my original installation.  When I try to read the Deluxe Disc 1, it spins and spins forever (or so it seems) and does not read the disc so that I may install the SDK.

I have the SDK on an old computer.  Is it OK to simply copy the SDK files from the old one and paste into the new computer, or does the SDK HAVE to be installed from DISC 1 ?

Two things I can think of.

One is the tools will not be entered to the dll.xml file so they won't show up in the sim.

The second is a maybe, you will not have any registry entries for the SDK. That is a maybe because I don't know if the SDK adds any registry entries.

Also the SDK needs to match the sim version, so if the old computer doesn't have Acceleration installed on it and the new one does, the SDK will not match the sim.

Joe

If you copy from an old installation the SDK registry entry won't be made, programs like ADE will not be able to auto-detect the needed SDK components, gmax will not be able to export a .mdl, etc. If you can't browse the disk in windows explorer (very common BTW) you can try running the SDK installer from the Run box. Press Windows key+R, paste the line below into the run box and press OK:

[drive letter]:\SDK\setup.exe

Substitute [drive letter] for the actual drive letter of your DVD drive of course. I would recommend directing the installer away from the Program Files (x86) folder. If you're running Acceleration with your FSX you'll also need to install the sp1a and Accel SDKs. Put the Accel disk in the drive and try running first:

[drive letter]:\SDK\SP1a\fsx_sdk_sp1a.exe

...and when that finishes you'll need to run:

[drive letter]:\SDK\sdk.msi

If you're not running Accel I assume you're running SP2 (if you're not you should be), the bottom line is your SDK version has to match your FSX version so in that case you'll need to go here and download/install the SP1 & SP2 SDKs after you've installed the RTM SDK in the first step above:

Thank you DaveH for posting this topic, and thank you Jim Robinson for a solution to this problem. I have just purchased a new computer and FSX installed from disk perfectly. When I tried to install the SDK I had the same problem as DaveH above, I gave up all hope until I came across this topic. Using the run command worked, and I can now edit and save AFCAD's using ADE X.

You're welcome Ned, glad to hear it worked for you. Welcome to the forums BTW.

Thanks from me also, Jim.  I will try your suggestion.  In the meantime, I just copied the files over from the old computer, and ADE seems to work OK at compiling.
