An Interesting Future for Outerra

Will the mystery of the lumpmen ever be solved? The developers only laugh. Watch yourself at night, just in case!!

I am planning also on downloading ogre3d and world machine. Lets see what they have to offer.

I took some time to look at ogre since I was unfamiliar, and didn't see anything applicable to a sim.....

World machine is absolutely beautiful for creating terrain, but seems to have no vehicle options, so again not so sure of its use in a flight sim...

Or did I miss something?

But they would have something similar to place objects and simulated aircrafts ? not sure though gotta try them first.

Looks great. The second addon airplane for outerra?

Looking at those upcoming updates, I might spend 15.- even if I need to bother booting Windows.

Any ideas on how to remove that greyish/whitish look on the background mountains?

Reduce atmospheric scattering. It's in the environment settings. In fact there are a lot of ways to subtly alter how things look.

Thanks, looks much better. Just bought it and it's fun. Any ideas on how to zoom in the cockpit and/or select autopilot?

No autopilot! Just trim trimitty trim trim. Make sure to go to the control settings and map the various trim settings to your controller. For more instrument info, try hitting tab while in flight.

For fun try messing with the FOV found in the graphics tab.

There is a pretty enthusiastic DCS developer who hangs on the forums that made a simplified XML that keeps the plane more stable, but opening it up just shows the guts yanked out of the settings.

I've been trying to figure out what it all means and how to be a bit more selective.

Also for more on the environment settings.... http://forum.outerra.com/index.php?topic=1758.0

As an aside, anyone technically inclined can take a look at some of whats going on by hitting Alt E while in plane. Some internal information is displayable that could likely be made some good use of by some community guru(s). There is a camera position setting, if you can figure out exactly how the heck to use it.

Jsbsim does have the capability of implementing an autopilot, (and a lot more) but I don't think the Outerra guys are themselves Flight specialists. Its why I think they really need a hand in developing those deeper systems. They need some help!

Anyone in this community know something about the internals of flightsims?  :P

This is our time to make our voices and talents count, or forever hold our peace if this goes down the arcade shooter pathway.

mgh.

Three things.

First, is that nobody ever claimed a 1:1 correlation of foliage in Outerra with the real world, and if that's what you are looking for, you might first give examples of a sim in which that is the case without careful hand positioning or approximate Osm data which Outerra is already looking at using.

Second is that you are being selective in whatever it is you are trying to prove. Even a slight re-positioning in the same area would have instead given you this view, the two alternate depictions proving exactly nothing except that the placement of foliage is not perfect, which I think we all knew anyway.......

i038.jpg

Third;

The advantage of engines like Outerra is that the world is programmable/malleable/deformable to various degrees depending on the engine. Take a look.

Proland: Circa 2010 on a Nvidia GTX 470

The point is that in these type of engines its not hard to change things to suit yourself. If a user thinks there is a scarcity of trees in a certain position, then lobby Outerra to expose placement functionality sooner rather than later, and then enjoy the opportunity to place forests in the exact position that suits you best.

I feel you are missing the whole point in your enthusiasm.

Central London isn't covered totally coverage in foliage, now matter how it can be re-positioned. It reality, it is covered by roads, and buildings - it even has a major airport at Heathrow. None of those, of course, are shown.

Until Outerra can offer all these features  it still a "foliage" engine.

There are two ways you can look at anything. Glass half full and glass half empty.

In all the conversation to date on this subject, at least in this thread, you seem to have missed repeatedly people saying once there are roads, once we can add some cities etc. In other words, you are not saying anything new, nor giving information people are not already aware of, so again, I'm at a loss as to the exact point.

Outerra is a world in progress, First the terrain, then additionally oceans, rivers trees roads buildings, etc.

People in the thread (myself included) have repeatedly mentioned Outerra as currently in the process of laying the foundation on which later work can be done. The link given by the OP showed some of the developers current plans for improvement/advancement and I have linked to their commitment to move to 64bit to accommodate future growth and additions by third parties.

Additionally, its been mentioned that the developers are attempting to incorporate databases Like the Google maps you are using in your picture, or like OSM to allow road placement and building footprints much like X-plane 10 as well as their own terrain sculpting tools similar to those in the video. In reply to my Query, Cameni wrote on the Outerra forum:

There are two different levels to which this can go - a planet sculptor allowing large scale modifications, and a scenery editor suitable to override the procedurally generated stuff. We are initially going to add the latter, in the form of a vector overlay engine that can modify various attributes of the terrain and its materials, vegetation etc. It's primarily meant for the import of vector databases like OSM, though a manual editing of the vector data will be possible as well. One example of the vector system that already works are the roads.

You mention Outerra as a "foliage Engine". And mention my missing the point in my enthusiasm. What point exactly? I would in turn express surprise that you seem to have missed the growing library of vehicles, buildings roads and etc exhibited prominently both in this and other threads, as well as the Outerra and other forums showcasing the possibilities and potential of the engine.

Or the announcement of additional members to the Outerra team to help things begin to move along faster.

In a post just a bit before yours, I wrote that there is no reason we should not be able to work happily with Outerra to accommodate both our goals and theirs together; As long as nobody started wanting FSX functionality by the day after tomorrow.

Yet here we are.

To what end, exactly?

To me its kind of a question of are we ready to think out of the box and explore all the possible futures, or remain bound by the past forever. Things are moving forward, and we can decide to be part of it or not. That doesn't mean discarding the past, it just means not rejecting the future.

Hi Everyone!

At Thalmic Labs we're big fans of the immersive nature of the Outerra world with the Oculus Rift and have spent some time tinkering with it on the side.

We're interested in building a demo that lets users combine the Oculus Rift with two Myo armbands (http://www.thalmic.com/myo) to fly around the Outerra world (in first-person) like Ironman . Since we have our hands full perfecting our gesture control technology, we’d love for some of you great builders in the Outerra community to help us bring this demo to life!

We’re looking for someone to build a flying human model that can be used for the basis of this demo. We'd also want the flying dynamics to be controlled by the Myos (1 per arm), so some sort of dual propulsion would be ideal (you can think of the Myos as 2 joysticks, each with a bunch of buttons on them).

We’re offering two free Myos (one for each arm :) to whoever can build these models and give them Ironman-like flight properties (we’ll take care of the Myo integration), and we’d love to feature your models in a promo video that celebrates Rift + Myo and the amazing possibilities that come from combining these technologies with the Outerra world.

If you're interested in helping out, please e-mail scott.greenberg@thalmic.com

This video was made in an afternoon just to illustrate the concept and isn't an actual integration yet. But with your help, we’d love to make it a reality :)

Sincerely,

Ben, Scott and the Thalmic team
