2014 And Still No New 747 Classic or DC-10

Featured Replies

Just thinking out loud here... we are now into FSX's eighth year and we still don't have a decent native 747 Classic. We still don't have a decent native DC-10. We've only recently got a native DC-8 (albeit the early 10-40 series).

It seems in the FS world that popular aircraft that are missing from the developers' catalogues seem to appear in twos or threes all of a sudden over a relatively short timeframe - see the King Air, 737-200 and Tristar.

Anyone willing to make a bet that when we finally do get a new 747 Classic or DC-10 we end up with two or three on the market in the space of a year?

You are right, it is a shame that there is no quality 747-100/200/300 on the market, as well as there's no quality DC-10.

I would not bet there will be one, the comming two years.

Although I love the classics, I do not want to have the light versions of it by CS or JF. I would love PMDG making one instead.

I do not see the DC-10 happening. There already is the JF one from 2007. Honestly, it is one big disappointment, I never felt flying a real airplane with that thing.

The MD-11 was not a success for PMDG in terms of sales and money-making. So there will be no DC-10 from this corner.

However, I would see a PMDG 747 classic happen! Perhaps after 747 V2.0, the development team could concentrate on a new project. Perhaps this could be the 747 classic. Featuring the 747-100 as the base pack and the -200 / -300 variants as an expansion.

But, I think that Captain Sim might pick up the 747 Classic interest.

What I really would like to see, is a quality Airbus A320, 330 and the 340. I am also waiting for the Qualitywings/Enigma 737 Classic. This surely will be a true competitor to the PMDG NGX.

But!!! Above all, what I really miss in the FSX world is the Airbus A380, the Cow of the Skies!

To be honest to me that JF/CLS 747 doesn't look like so much of an improvement from the previous version, just some minor updates if the product description is correct.

Maybe I'll get it if they have improved the flight dynamics from the previous version.

I wish CS would make one as they are quite good at making those old bird.

Captain Sim is the most likely developer to fill both gaps

I'd love to have that fantastic Ready For Pushback 747-200 in FSX, it was one of my favourite aircraft in FS9. I learned using the CIVA INS in it. It's system modelling was just outstanding, a pure joy to do cargo ops with this beautiful addon!

I would be extremely happy to see a decent DC-10 or 747 Classic. I've managed to acquire copious amounts of reference for both (i.e photoshoots, sound recordings and system details), its just finding the right place and time for such a project.

Its a shame about the CLS 747-200/300 update however, as the external wasn't too bad, it was the VC that left more to be desired.

From what I understand the feeling of most devs is that most people want to fly modern jets only which to me shows that a lot in this community rely on Lnav/Vnav way to much. To be honest the NGX or 777 dont offer a hole lot of challenges I watched a video on how to cold start both one time each and had it down pat, maybe its because I'm used to those kinda things from realworld flying idk

hell I wish there was a way to navigate by the stars in FSX now that would be a challenge think of flying from England to Bermuda by the stars calculating wind drift ect. No more being board on a long flight. Usally I hand fly to cruise hit the AP and go to bed wake up the next morning and start descent. No way I would do that in a DC-6 using celestial navigation hehe.

I think the A380 is very conspicuous by its absence in FS. Hopefully the NLS one will be a keeper.

I had the original version of that aircraft/panel way back in FS2000. I think it was one of my very first payware purchases. I absolutely loved the FS9 version, even if it was starting to show its age in terms of panel bitmaps (shudder to think what that overhead would look like nowadays!). Like yourself I also cut my teeth on the CIVA INS with that aircraft. It was such a busy aeroplane to fly, there was literally always something to be doing and you couldn't just pull the gear up and hit LNAV/VNAV. I had all the performance charts and takeoff/climb/cruise EPR tables printed out for reference. I remember the real sense of achievement when you pulled off a successul flight - especially if you opted to disconnect the AP/AT at 10,000ft and hand fly the approach!

I would be extremely happy to see a decent DC-10 or 747 Classic.

I know you guys have got a lot on your plate at the moment with regards to the 787 (which I'm looking forward to as well), but I wonder why some of these classic heavies have been neglected for so long? I don't think it's because everyone wants to fly modern stuff - otherwise A2A wouldn't have enjoyed the success they have.

Anyone remember the development pics from the Air Bleed Simulations DC-10 for FS9? Another promising project that never made it to our hard drives...

Here's my take on it, and please don't think the following is aimed at you and you alone- nor is this post affiliated in anyway with any development group.

Once a big name developer puts out a 'triple A' addon, we tend to forget just a few months prior we may not have had any decent simulation of that specific aircraft. The PMDG 777 is a good example of this. It hasn't been out for very long, but without making conscious effort to do so, we don't think about the time 'before' having a pretty damn perfect version of the 777. I feel the scope for most tubeliner developers over the last decade has been to produce the most popular planes that are not available, or aren't simulated to the level of their development team's capacity. Its a basic calculation of how popular an aircraft is vs. what addons are currently available of that aircraft. The more popular a specific airliner is, the more likely it is for an addon developer to create it, regardless of the current quality of available versions. However, the inverse of this is true too, so aircraft like the DC-10 or 747 Classics have gone largely under the radar simply because there have always been somewhat decent versions available considering the popularity within the community.

Furthermore, there have always been more pressing aircraft to work on, such as the 737NG, 777 and Airbus family. I'm pretty sure the DC-10 and 747 Classic have been brought up during internal discussions of 'what to make next' at every 'tubeliner' development group. The problem has always been someone would then mention something like an A330 or triple seven (up until recently having pretty much nothing for FSX), immediately rendering the less popular aircraft less worthwhile given the development time of any airliner.

Even now, I still feel like we are missing some extremely popular aircraft such as the 767, 757 and wide-bodied Airbus. Although there are multiple versions currently available, none quite satisfy everyone's needs; be it visuals or system fidelity. Once these get tagged, I could see other aircraft like the DC-10 featuring higher up on a developer's "to-do" list. However it always works out best (for developer and consumers alike) to develop what is currently in the skies above you. While some of us certainly enjoy a trip down memory lane with roaring Conway engines or RB211-22Bs, the majority are most definitely in favour of aircraft still operating- and quite rightly so.

I am certain we will see more of these classic airliners appearing in our virtual skies in years to come, although most of the 'big guys' have been working hard to fill the gaps of today's skies before worrying about yesteryear's.

Yes, this but done PMDG style, please!!

Flew a dozen or more smoke filled, bitter orange juice in a tiny steel can, ear popping flights on this bird as a kid flying across the Atlantic. Some great times. Use to get a tiny, metal toy version of the plane for free. Visited and sat in the cockpit several times but was too young and shy to appreciate it.

Purposely have held off buying any of the current 747s for FSX because they are too 'lite'.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there - people want to fly the same aircraft they see flying in the real world every day. That means 737NGs, Airbuses, etc.

It's a shame really because a well made 747 Classic would be utterly awesome and a lot of fun. Still, we've got a great Concorde from FSLabs, and Just Flight are doing a VC10 (my all time favourite airliner, part of their new higher complexity range that is kicking off later today with the release of the Canberra PR9) so I don't think a decent complexity 747 Classic is totally out of the question.

BTW, just noticed your avatar pic.... very appropriate!  B)

I am hoping that Captain Sim designs a 747 Classic,DC 10, and an A380.  I love their VC and exterior modeling.  Just Flight/CLS has been coming out with some good releases, but they need to kick it up a notch before I purchase anymore of their products.

If I remember correctly, the Air Force had a navigator aboard the KC-135s using Sextants into the 1990's.
