Discussion Topic for New Image Policies

This is the discussion topic for the new Image Policies coming into effect later this week.

 

We will be implementing shortly our new Image Posting Policies. We expect to bring these policies into effect by this Friday night EDT. Here are the new policies which are aimed to give you more flexibility in your creativity, relieve AVSIM of some server load, and will put more onus on copyright holders to protect their copyrights:

• When we turn on these new policies, we will no longer accept uploads of images to the AVSIM servers.
• User who wish to post images in the AVSIM forums will need to host them on systems like Drop Box, Google Drive, etc. and link to them in their forum posts.
• We will put no size limit on the user's image, but the system will automatically scale it down to fit the width of the viewer’s screen forum rendition (in other words, the image will be pared down to fit within the forum view of the message where the image appears). Clicking on the image will display the full size image hosted by the posting member.
• We will maintain our position on poaching bandwidth by not allowing users to link to images hosted on anything but their own blog, Drop Box site or similar. Any complaint from a web site about "leaching" will result in removal of the image and image posting rights by the offending member.
• If you host an image, you are responsible for protecting the copyrights of others. Violations of copyright are strictly the responsibility of the member.
• AVSIM will remove images that are obvious infringement and will respond to requests for removal by verifiable copyright holders.

The new, proposed rules look great!  I hope this solves many of the problems with the server overloads and sometimes slow surfing on AVSIM.

Is providing links to images hosted on sites like airliners.net that have terms of use which specify using this code:

Yes, if that is what their terms of use approve of, then that is acceptable here.

Over the years I have used various image hosting sites, and I have always ended up dealing with policy changes and such to the point that I gave up on them. To me it seems that most of them are pushing the whole social media thing which I have no desire to be a part of.

 

Unless someone can enlighten me as to where I can just upload pictures for later use and be left alone doing so I guess you won't see any pics from me from now on.

I use both Google Drive and Dropbox and have had no issues with either.

Is this still only for certain forums as previously announced, or is it now going to be turned off forum-wide?  I ask in reference to the FSRTW Race forums, where we need this functionality (which has pretty much no impact on the rest of the forum for at least 10 out of 12 months of the year)...

There will be images uploads that we do accept and categories of users who can use that facility. The RTW team will certainly be allowed to upload their images of race progress, etc.

I know what you mean.  I used Imageshack for a long time.  I don't have many things on there, just stuff to link to in posts.  But they have since gone subscription only, and not worth it for a few megs of pictures.  Now got an account on Imgur.  It also pushes the social stuff but if you ignore that I don't think it imposes anything on you.

.) it is allowed to post a link to an html page containing that image, e.g.: www.website.com/look_at_this_funny_image.html

Poaching in this context is using an image hosted elsewhere and embedding it in a topic here. Poaching does not occur when the image is hosted on and served from your site, or on one of the many file hosting sites, like Drop Box and Google Drive that you own.

No. Posting a link to an image that takes the reader to that site is okay. Embedding an image, equivalent to an html code of <img src="blahdeblah.com/image1"> is not. Anytime you post a link as opposed to embedding an image fond on a web site not your own, or not a file storage system not your own, is against our policies.

Sorry to be pedantic but I want to be sure I understood it well:

 

.) I'm ALLOWED to post any kind of link here (e.g. http://www.fake_website.com/fake_image.jpg )

 

.) I'm NOT ALLOWED to embed it as an image (using the "Image" attachment icon ), unless it's hosted on a personal storage system.

 

Is that correct?

 

 

Another question, will it be allowed to embed images hosted on those websites specifically devoted to image sharing? For example, imgur.com provides the code for "message boards & forums".
