Real World over Snowdonia UK from a Mooney

Recommended Posts

Guest Peter Sidoli

I have posted some pictures I took over the weekend from a Mooney over Snowdonia in the UK.They are a good example of snow on mountains to compare to what we have in the sim.If anyone has the full satellite scenery with UK VFR terrain and can locate any of these moutains it would be interesting to see how close Visual flight rendition is to the real :-) ?Peterhttp://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...id=183643&page=http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...id=183646&page=

It's a bit tricky to compare. Not because of the scenery but because with FS set to Winter settings the UK light levels are truly miserable. You get some of the most glorious flying days in the UK in winter - as your superb sceenshots clearly show. The cold air clears all the crud out of the sky and the clarity brilliant. :-sun1 In FS the winter lighting is much darker and it gives the impression that daytime is permanently gloomy. It's impossible to get the sky looking like your shots unless you switch to Spring or Summer settings.boneshttp://fsaviation.nethttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/ng_driver.jpg

LOL! Just as you mentioned it, I was already trying to set up some shots. I'll get them up soon as I can Peter.

I'll also try to set up some shots later today. VFR Photographic is only summer textures though so there'll be no snow on the mountains. One of the drawbacks of photo sceneries - to display winter textures the whole coverage area would have to be photographed again during winter time...I'm pretty sure that's EGCW you're landing at in the last pic. I've been to the UK2000 counterpart many times :)Have you got any coordinates or directions to the particular peaks you photographed? There are lots of mountains in Snowdonia and they all look the same on the chart :-lol

I've posted two comparisons in the screenshot forum. VFR Terrain looks very close! I'll see if I can track down that photo above.

Many thanks for doing the comparison shots. Frankly the simularity is amazing even to the rock face streaks. Now if we could only have the whole world to that detail :-)ThanksPeter

Yes EGCW :-) dont even attempt at finding some of the shots which were not around Snowdon as you will get lost as I usually do flying VFR :-)You might be able to find shot one to locate in FS as thats around Snowdon.Peterthree more before the moderator moves them ;-)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/104661.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/104662.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/104663.jpg

Posted two shots in the forum.I found that running FS2004 windowed in Slew mode with the pics open for references made it easier to locate the places but it was still quite hard and time consuming. Also think I need to install a darker FSW cloud set :)
