February 28, 201412 yr I plan to stick my new EVGA GTX-780ti sc into my current machine replacing my EVGA GTX-680sc. While looking at the card info I see that it is PCIe 3.0 capable. My current MB is a ASUS P8P67 Deluxe which is only PCIe 2.0. I also have new Corsair memory to install: MEM 4Gx4|CORSAIR CMP16GX3M4X1600C7 Should I think about upgrading the MB to a newer one? Recommendations. If I do, should I upgrade the CPU too? Recommendations. Will I see much benefit in FSX? My current rig is a i7-2600k at 4.63GZ with a Noctua DH-d14. My system runs okay but is getting a little long in the tooth; 2+ years. I want to stick with Intel and ASUS.
March 1, 201412 yr Depending on what other stuff you do with that set-up, I'd invest in a new mb since that chip is still great for gaming/simming. Look on ebay for an Asus z77-v Deluxe or comparable for that CPU/GPU combo you now have. I'm sure more than enough guys here at Avsim will testify on that CPU/GPU. Of course if you have the money then a whole new set-up wouldn't be a bad thing either but keep the 780. James D. Edwards
March 1, 201412 yr I agree with the previous recommend! I also have a 2600k at 4.8 with a h80 cooler, on an Asus Z77 board and I'm very happy with it, especially considering the low price.
March 1, 201412 yr Author Okay, I have ordered a ASUS P8P77-V Deluxe. From everything I have read my Noctua NH-D14 is at least equal to or better than any of the current CLC systems out there today. The only problem with it, is having to remove a few fins at the bottom of one of the radiators for memory clearance. At the present I have no plans to WC my video card; that seems to be the main reason for custom cooling from what I have gathered. Paul J suggested a custom water kit but I am not sure if it is $$ worth it; although a few more tenths of GHz's would be nice? I sure hate to think about having to install and do the maintenance on that type of system. Thanks Rick S.
