01APR14 - PMDG 777-200LR/F Feature Preview - WX RADAR

Recommended Posts

You got it wrong Robert, Flex is correct. You cannot depart without a working wx radar, and I believe he is referring to international routes, and this rule is particularly true for over water flights.

We are actually both correct, however I most definitely didn't make my self clear in my initial post. The radar can be inop if no significant weather is expected on route.   (Some) company's will also allow  the aircraft to be dispatched if the flight is operated during the day and you can visually avoid any weather enroute.

You are spot on my friend, but a blanket statement that you can still go fly with an inop radar is not quite correct.

The QF A380 for example has two wx radars, and if both fail on the ground prior to flight, it is a no go.

If they both fail in flight but good conditions are forecast you may continue and do the best you can.

If both fail and storms or cyclones are expected, particularly over the pacific, you are to turn back.

Cathay has similar restrictions on their B777 fleet.

Never underestimate mother nature, keep her in sight in you can.

Q´s to all of you who have experience with WX RADAR:

After reading the manual of the Collins 2100 RADAR gaining a little understanding i believe most common use is the Auto Mode which has automatic TILT and Gain variation included and Auto functions during takeoff and climb.

The Q´s i would like to ask you is :

*Overall Q is when do i know what is detected below/above and what is detected just in front of me ? (pure tilt based ?)

* How often is Manual mode selected and used in real life ? (Scenario please) (includ. Ground detec below 10000feet)

* If i am on Ground holding on the runway and see a storm comming in front of me how do i know how bad it gets during Takeoff and Climbing? For instance i would like to know if its only a shower from 0-5000 feet then clear skies afterwards? Is it possible from reading out of RADAR or is it only distance? (pure tilt based ?)

Thanks Michael

Manual mode comes in handy i.e. when we fly into BKK in the rain season. Sometimes you want to be in full control when you are looking for cells.

Thanks ,

What is the worst scenario you would avoid? FL350 i guess (iceing thunderstorms ,but how about takeoff and climb out ? Do you use Tilt +2-7 just prior for takeoff? Turbulence and lightning is the worst part ?

Just some clarification on this.

We at PILOT'S have contacted PMDG some estimated 6 months ago for supporting a weather radar for their 777 using our FS Global Real Weather. Unfortunately, despite several emails and using personal contacts we have not heard back and all emails remained unanswered.

For our customers we are of course interested in supporting the 777 and upcoming PMDG aircraft, but it will not work w/o talking to us. :-)

Some more clarifications about FS Global Real Weather:

Today I received a message from PMDG. There is a chance, that due to some reason or other at least one message from them may not have reached us.

The facts stated above were correct from my point of view at the time of writing. However, I do not hesitate to admit, that they may be seen not to be correct from another point of view.

There was no intention to affront PMDG.

What comes remains to be seen. Many controversies in the world could be avoided by placing oneself into the position of the other.

Some shots sent to me today, of a flight in a B737 from BN to AYPY and return undertaken yesterday. Note the ominous sight of Tropical Cyclone "ITA" which is due to cross the coast of this state sometime today.

None, at that stage the cyclone was 200nm off the coast. Made for a bumpy ride apparently!

I wouldn't be surprised if US-based airliners would allow their airplanes to fly without a working WX radar, when for instance, I guess that southwest airlines once did not have Auto-throttle installed on their planes :-)
