Connecting two pcs to one monitor

Recommended Posts

Hello

I am about to finally upgrade from my current dual core system to a I7 4770K, at the moment I  use a Samsung syncmaster 932 monitor, what I would like to do until I upgrade my monitor is be able to connect both PCs to the same monitor. My current setup is connected by the VGA output, can I just connect the new system to the DVI input and switch between the two via the front panel?

Yep. Both PCs will still need their own keyboard and mouse though. To share a monitor, mouse, and keyboard between the two computers, you could look into a KVM switch.

Synergy requires separate monitors but shares mouse and keyboard...

If you use two separate inputs on one monitor, it can work with only one screen. A bit more of a hassle, and part of why I just went with an Iogear KVM switch in the end.

Dazkent,

Goates makes an excellent point. Since you have only a vga video requirement, your choices are plentiful. A DVI kvm is more expensive but well worth it if you have higher-end video cards and a good monitor. Any name brand kvm will suit you well, but always try to read some user reviews from multiple sources. I've used a Belkin in work until I got lazy and now just have multiple systems and monitors on my desktop....LOL!

Good luck on your search.

Thanks for the advice guys, I will just connect the two pcs to the one monitor for now, I am looking at getting a bigger monitor maybe 24Inch as the one I currently have is 19inch are there any brands to avoid and do I need to worry about response times?
