Haswell Overclock - Should I Live With It?

Folks,

 

Just completed a new build for FSX and "upgraded" to the i4770K chip running on a Asus Maximus VI Hero mobo. Despite my best efforts, I can't seem to get a stable overclock passed 4.3gHz. Should I live with this, or roll the dice on a new processor and sell this one? So far, I'm not too impressed with Haswell. I needed 1.35v to get a stable overclock at 4.3, running memory at 2400mHz. Temps on the CPU are around 33c at idle, and as high as 73c at 100% using the Asus benchmark software....

 

I did delid the proc as well....

 

Will I be sacrificing anything performance wise in FSX with this chip/overclock?

If you installed AI Suite. Get rid of it. It messes with voltages and all types of other things. I am stable now at 4.4 with a cache ratio of 42 now that I got rid of AI Suite.

Like the previous poster said, do it manually, not with the auto software.

 

Also, I am not sure what the max voltage for that chip is, but it seems you still have very low temps. I would crank it up to 83 ish in a bench, which means you won't see it above high 60s in normal fsx usage.

Thanks guys. Not using AI Suite, and the overclock is all manual. Using RealTemp to monitor temps. I just worry about volting the CPU any higher than it is...

You'll probably get way more active help and experienced advice here. I understand that Haswell is a bit of a different beast than Sandy Bridge, but I learned a lot from the community there when OCing the i7-2600K. I managed to push it to 4.7, and with HT on I have FSX running full out on cores 2-7 @ locked 30fps with temps mostly in the high-50s and vcore around 1.35. But getting it just 100MHz higher was a bridge too far, pushing voltage and temps unacceptably high. Each individual cpu has its own unique characteristics, and I felt lucky that I got one capable of getting even that much extra performance.

 

I couldn't have done this without the huge amount of coaching I got at overclock.net. Good luck with your OC.

Sell it and wait for haswell refresh if you can the new TIm is supposed to drop temps by 20c and the new refresh chips are built for overclocking according to intel

Thanks folks, it's the chip, it's just a dog. I got one of the supposed 30% that arent very good clockers. So, I'm stuck at 4.3gHz. Not sure how much that will impact my FSX performance in terms of visuals and FPS. I plan to fly mostly PMDG stuff with as much eye candy as both my wallet and proccessor can afford.

 

Total specs are:

 

i4770K at 4.3gHz

EVGA GTX780

SSDs for OS and FSX

8GB of RAM GSkill Trident at 2400mHz

Windows 7 64 Bit

FYI, I wasn't referring to using the 4 way optimization. But having it installed period. I took me a few hard lessons to forget about having it installed at all. Doing manual overclock and having it installed resulting in many a blue screen. Dipawaymode.exe power saving crap.

The answer to your question, is that it's extremely unlikely to make much difference.

 

The difference between 4.3 and lets say 4.5, is about 5%. So if you manage 30 frames per second, the difference is a miniscule 1.5 frames per second.

 

Have you tried backing off your RAM voltage? the IMC might not be too fond of high RAM frequency and low timings.

 

Some chips need more volts. My 3770K needs more volts than the large hadron collider.

It's a power saving feature...

 

Not usually necessary to abandon AiSuite.

 

 

I believe you can disable it in the 4-way menu of AI suite, EPU. Untick the away mode box and press apply.

Thanks again guys... I have tried all combinations of RAM frequency, CPU multiplier, voltage, etc... I simply can't coax the 4770K beyond 4.3. I wish I had built my new system around the 3770K!

Go read through this guide, it is a step by step guide to overclock a 4770K.  The above link at OCN is good, but this guide does it step by step and you do not have to wade through pages of a tread to get an answer to a question.

A few recommendations:

 

1- To get a decent OC you need a decent HSF.  I use a Thermalright Archon SB-E x2.

2- Between the CPU die and IHS and then between the IHS and the HS you need a good tim.  I use Coollabratory Liquid Pro (CLP).

3- If you want to use a contained water HSF instead of an air HSF you need at least a Corsair H110.

Using the above guide with a SB-E x2 with CLP I have a 47/44 OC and my highest core temp with OCCT CPU-Linpack AVX 64 bit is 78C.  My 4770K is delidded.

Don't forget Haswell is a faster architecture than the 3770K. So 4.3 is more like 4.5-4.6 on Ivy Bridge.

 

The silicone lottery dictates the overclock. But don't despair, the difference between 4.3, and common higher Haswell overclocks is but a few frames per second. It's no big deal.
