Hello guys,

so the time has come and I need a new computer. I kind of know what's good and what's not, but not if the parts will work well together.

I don't know if I will overclock, it really depends how fsx is running and what you guys can recommend. Also I have no idea of motherboards,

what ram or cooler to take.

What I know, is that my budget is at around ~1000€. And the parts I would like to have in it are :

I7-4770k

Nvidia GTX 770

1 TB harddrive for other stuff and a 250gb ssd for fsx

Even those parts can be changed if you advise me to, I'm kind of a noob when it comes to pc parts right now.

Thanks for you help, I appreciate it!! :)

Greets from Germany!

you are spot on.

Combine is with a Z87 board and some 1600mhz or better ram at cl9 (no need for 16gb), a 700W+PSU, and a cooler like a corsair H80i, so you can over clock.

Also make sure you get a nice and large tower to accommodate the large video card.

If you have the budget, get the 4gb version of the 770, so ur better prepared for P3D and x plane if ever you want to switch later on.

Very often you'll find that a good board will have the ability to automatically boost your clock speed when it's required and drop it down again when not. Processors these days can be run at higher clock speeds without any trouble. My clock speed is rated 3.4Ghz but boosts up to 4.4 when required, much higher can lead to some instability. The importance of good cooling can't be overstated though. Many run water cooling with which I've no experience but a good tower with lots of speed adjustable fans and a beefy cpu air cooler does the job well for me with cpu temps tending never to go higher than mid 50s C. I have the 4gig 770, great card! Temps never higher than mid 60s C. My case has 3 fans front, two back and one top plus the cpu cooler fan. I found Hardwareversand an excellent source pricewise even when postage was factored in to Ireland. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the answers! So do you have an example for a motherboard, what brand? And about overclocking I will have to see, it really depends on how fsx is running on normal setup.

Ok i will check Hardwareversand out! :)

I personally went for the ASRock Fatal1ty  Z77 Performance. When I upgrade I tend to aim for the level one below the newest of everything in order to get best bang for buck as they say. The BIOS takes care of the boost by just setting it to on.

Ok thanks. Is it important what bios is on the motherboard?

I found a motherboard ASRock Z87 Extreme 4,how's that? :)

I would be confident that that would have more or less the same functionality wrapped up in a better board than mine. It'll say somewhere in the specs that it has boost I imagine, you can usually find that info on the site selling the board. If not just go to the ASRock site itself and the info will be there somewhere.

Just on another note, I have found the extra headroom on the 4Gig 770 has been needed in some of the games/sims I run. I would have regretted buying the 2gig if I had gone that way.

Can't go wrong with a Gigabyte board, been using them for years

P3D v4.5 MSFS2020 Hisense 50" 4K TV

Ryzen 9600x 64gb DDR5 6000mhz, Asrock B650m HDV/M.2 Gigabyte 16gb 9070XT, Thermalright Aqua Elite 240mm  2TB NVMe Boot/FS2020 Drive, 2TB NVMe P3D Drive.

Saitek Yoke, Pedals, Radio Panel, Switch Panel, 2 x FiPs

Yeah about the 4gb 770, sounds really nice but  I won't be able to afford it though...

So been browsing through motherboards, I still have no clue why some are more expensive than others. What's the difference between a H87 and a Z87?

I couldn't honestly say about the differences between boards. My approach has always been to decide what parts I need based on what they will be required to do. For instance if you use X-Plane 10 as I do then the extra VRAM goes a long way on the 770, without it I would need to run at lower settings, I imagine P3d would benefit from it too (not sure) though I've stopped using P3d and FSX altogether at this stage. Many of the games coming out now make great use of it tbh. You've got to remember that you are looking to get the most you can out of a particular budget. It took me weeks of research to come up with my build for my budget. It has to be as futureproof as possible and is not something to rush, take your time! Whatever you do, don't think that paying big bucks for one component which is capable of outperforming your other components that you skimped on because you went for that most expensive of items in it's bracket is a good idea. You need to match the performance of the individual pieces with each other in as much as you can keeping in mind what it needs to do for you. You need to do things like figure out how much RAM you need. If you don't do  things like photoshop or video conversion then 16 is better than 32 simply because it costs less and frees up money for the other components. Btw, in ram timings, lower is better. 1600Mhz RAM is fine for simmers. Ask yourself what makes a good computer for what I need to do, if you don't know, slow down and find out or it will bite you in the &@($* down the line.

You need the Z87 if you want to over clock.

someone here suggested a Z77, but that is a different socket, so not good for the processor you want.

I would personally go with any Z87 board, at ATX format, around the $120 isn mark.

I dont see the need to pay more than that, unless you are really going to push the limits on very high over clocking, which most of us dont.

I have dont many build with boards in that price range and they all worked perfectly and over clocked like a charm, so I have personally never understood why some people pay 500 or more on a mobo. On the other hand, I never did, so maybe I dont know what I am missing?
