PANC - Alaska 737NG with Sharklets

Recommended Posts

So right before I was about to depart PANC a couple days ago, we were told to give way to an Alaska 737.   I was dumbfounded to see Sharklets...didn't realize Boeing was selling the STC for that on the NGs.  Any chance we can get them for our NGX? :-D

Pictures in the link...kinda low quality had to grap it with a phone.

Those aren't Sharklets at all. Sharklets are Airbuses version of winglets and look like normal winglets. What you see there is a newer type of winglet refered to as the scimitar winglet.

They are not sharklets, they are "Split Scimitar" winglets.

They were designed for the max, and are being retrofitted to NG's.

Notice it is basically the same as the NG, with a small lower downward "winglet"

I hope I got the copyright thing correctly, please let me know otherwise.

You guys are splitting hairs honestly.  Either way, I wasn't expecting to see this on the NG aircraft, as its going to be featured on the MAX.  Caught me by surprise thought I'd share.

lol, it is a rare chance that I get to give good (?)  answers on the forum.

Makes sense to me though if they save around 1-2 % as they will be around long after the max shows up.

I got the same surprise when I first saw an Air Arabia A320 with sharkelts at OJAI last summer.

 Just re-read your post.

Splitting hairs?  I'm sure you could make an argument for it being too 'nit-picky,' but the funny thing about using the correct terminology is that you get better answers:

http://forum.avsim.net/topic/424715-is-it-feasible-to-incorporate-the-scimitar-winglets-in-a-future-ngx-update/#entry2841201

There's the official answer to your question, found using the search function with the term 'scimitar.'  Wouldn't have come up if I'd used 'sharklets.'
