FSX keeps crashing, Win 8.1

Recommended Posts

Hi people,

Im fairly new here.

Fsx keeps crashing for me mid flight, about after half an hour. By crashing I mean that it does the whole, "fsx has stopped working" error and since im running PMDG, i cant simply reload a saved flight, GREAT!

Im really motivated to fix this so please tell me what specs you need to know and what other information you need to know and ill put it up so i can work this out. Im sure im not the first person to have this type of problem.

Cheers,

Mick

Hi Mick,

There's lots of information about fixes for Win 8.1 in this forum and on other forums so you might want to start with some searches.  In any event, maybe I can point to to some of the fixes.  But first tell me about your rig.

I run the following:

Dell XP8500 with an I-7 Quad core 3770 chip 64 bit, 8 g of ram, I tb C drive for the system and the rest of my junk.  I have a dedicated 256 mb SSD drive exclusively for FSX.  I have an AMD Radeon video card.  FSX runs great on my machine using PMDG products.

Don't install FSX int the \Programs Files (x86) directory because this causes lots of problems.  You may be able to install FSX on the C drive, but put it in its own directory.  You install everything as administrator and run it as administrator.  Turn off all the UAC settings.  You need to install UIAutomationCore.dll version 6.0.5840.16386 in the root directory of FSX.  You can find references to this dll in the forum.  Don't run PMDG products full screen, otherwise you may get crashes.

I might suspect that you are running out of memory if you can fly for an hour before everything locks up.

I hope this information helps.  Let me know you machine's spec's and maybe we can find some more hints.  You can find a FSX tuning guide elsewhere on this forum.

You need to download and run AppCrashView and post the results of the latest crash here.  See the AVSIM CTD Guide to the right of this forum under Hot Spots.

Are we talking about the 777?  Because 1, it's not Win8 compatible, and 2, I think it's the easiest airplane to reload - it saves EVERYTHING.

PMDG T7 runs great in W8.1

You're free to disagree with my post, but this is straight out of PMDG's website on the T7 page.  "May work", as in "possible that it runs great for you but not for that other guy, just because".

OS: Windows 7 64-bit (older OSes such as Windows XP, 32-bit OSes, and Windows 8 may work, but we cannot guarantee compatibility or support)

Hi Jim, where did you get this from??

Hi Enrico,

Are you referring to:

"Don't install FSX int the \Programs Files (x86) directory because this causes lots of problems. Don't run PMDG products full screen, otherwise you may get crashes."?

If so, I don't specifically remember where I found this information but I found most of it thru google and forum searches.  There's a ton of it out there.  There's also a ton of bum scoop so you have to pick and choose.  I also communicated directly with PMDG when I first installed the NGX on my Win 8 machine and had troubles.

I have been happy with Win 8 and now Win 8.1 and how it runs FSX and the various addons.

Did you have specific questions about what I previously posted?

Jim Driskell

Do you have specific questions about what I said?

Enrico,

I forgot to mention that Ryan from PMDG and others on this and other forums cautioned against running FSX and particularly while running addons that have high resource utilization.

Hello Jim,

I hope you did not get offended by my question, as that was not my intention by any means...I was only referring to the full screen mode not compatible with PMDG products, as I read the intro to the NGX many times, but I do not recall any mentioning to the full screen issue, maybe I missed it, though, tonight I'll have another look. Interesting though, I'll consider it next time I decide to fly in full screen mode and have a crash....

PMDG products (NGX) may operate in full screen mode under Win 7 but I was referring to operations under Win 8 and Win 8.1.  Full screen mode may work, but there is lots of advice against running FSX and PMDG NGX under Win 8.1.  Something to do with how the video is handled.

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the abandoned forum lol.

I had some success with installing the latest version of FSUIPC 4.93

Also, i looked on youtube and updated my cfg file with Matt Davies (Belynz) recommendations. Link is here...

Seemed to work great...

NOW ive got this stupid Active sky error as_btstrp.dll

Can someone please shed some light?

Also I just flew from Paris to Zurich and my FSX CTD'd (due to lack off memory) at about 15.0 DME from landing, happy days. Love seeing that error because you know, ive spent $400 on 32gb of ram but fsx still wants more.

*grumble*

Any ideas on the Activesky error, and any light on the lack of memory issue???

What part is?

It being incompatible. I have always used windows 8 with it. No issues at all. PMDG just may have not tested with it.
