Grayed Out FSX Menus

Recommended Posts

When operating FSX I sometimes find that the drop down and right click menus on FSX are grayed out with no readable text making selecting options near impossible (i.e. changing airport).  Sometime later the menu text reappears.

Your dll.xml is corrupted.  Best thing is to disable modules in the dll.xml until the culprit is found.

Thanks Jim

I assume you are referring to the RAAS ddl.xml file.  This is what I am seeing.

Scot,

Go to your FSX/Fonts folder. How many fonts are listed there? You should have 13.

Hi Jim

There are 15 font files in my FSX/fonts folder (14 x .ttf and one .ttc).

You may want to see if one of those is corrupt.

No.  It is possible that the RAAS module entry located in the dll.xml is corrupt but you will never know that until you start disabling each one as shown in the AVSIM CTD Guide (you just have to change the one line <disabled>false<disabled> to <disabled>true<disabled>.  Or you can disable all of them except the first one, save it and then start up fsx again.

Hi All

Thank you for all the advice.  After a couple of flights today in and out of London Heathrow (EGLL), the problem seems to be related to this airport and the scenery I have running (UK2000Scenery Heathrow Extreme V3).  It is possible that FSX is becoming overloaded as the frame rate can drop to 10-15fps.

Wouldn't others who have this scenery have the same problem?

Hi Folks

Scotflieger -

When overstretched,

FSX will dither the viewport's rendered content.

Noticeably affects -

tooltips, menu, r/h context menu, atc window, kneeboard titles, mission captions, etc.

Similarly, scenery textures fallback to lower mips.

The symptom of dithered fonts

can have many, and multiple, causes,

but the key point is that -

your FSX user-settings are set too high

for your PC's available resources,

at that point in time.

Thanks Paul, that would explain it. Just landed at EGLL again and lost menu (dithered fonts).  I will look at my settings and scenery complexity.
