Features in FSX

Recommended Posts

Based on the locked sticky on the P3D forum, I think its only fair to point out some innacuracies in the list posted here.

Here is a list of items/features FSX does NOT have:

  • Tessellation
  • HDR (not the same as Bloom)   yes...but we are all aware that ENB/Sweetfx is available with much more flexibility
  • Special effects distance
  • Water reflections user vehicle   Water 2.X High/Water 2.X Max.
  • Water reflections SimObjects Water 2.X Max
  • Water reflections Terrain    Water 2.X High/Water 2.X Max.
  • Water reflections Vegetation Water 2.X Max
  • Water reflections Buildings Water 2.X Max
  • Shadow Map Count
  • Terrain Shadow Cast Distance  Not sure the advantage, since FSX has far superior terrain shadowing with less overhead
  • Cloud Shadow Cast Distance
  • Object Shadow Cast Distance
  • Internal Vehicle Cast/Receive shadows (partial Aircraft cast only in FSX) much less pixelated in DX10
  • External Vehicle Cast/Receive shadows (partial Aircraft cast only in FSX)
  • SimObject Cast/Receive shadows
  • Vegetation Cast/Receive shadows
  • Buildings Cast/Receive shadows (partial Buildings Cast only in FSX)
  • NoShadow Flagged Content
  • FXAA support  Forced in NI and works fine
  • MSAA specification
  • Texture Filtering specification (although bug requires setting in P3D or using NI to set anything above 16X)
  • Volumetric Fog
  • Wave animations adjust to conditions and wind direction  Enable DX10
  • DX11 support
  • Updated SDK (with VS support and more recent versions of 3DMax for better modeling)
  • SimDirector
  • Integrated SimConnect (now a managed part of P3D not a separate install)
  • Continued development of the product DX10 still in development with great success by a few brave souls

My aim is not to bash P3D and I support its continued development, and there are some stellar features, but let's be honest.

Biggest P3D peeves as it currently stands, imo.

-Spinning clouds of death need revisiting, much less an issue in FSX.

-Config screen is much more polished and complete in FSX (allow adjustment of settings without loading a flight) Really LM?

-EZDOK, in cockpit movement remains glitchy in P3D, and may never be fixed.

-Performance advantage of P3D, inconclusive data at this point.

Flame away...

My take on P3D V 2.2 is that in order to enjoy the added features I would need a new video card with more memory.

Plus, I have too many addons that may not work.

That's why I have decided to wait. Good luck to LM and I hope that devs support the platform.

I think we all need hardware that is not available yet, which is not a bad thing. P3D will be the platform of the future once all the software/hardware/addon kinks are sorted.

Thanks, Marc!

The thing I miss the most concerning FSX are the EULA discussions!!!

I can start one if you would like!

FSX does Tessellation in code to avoid gaps between tiles. One of the reasons for improving DX10 to DX11.
