Hi. :-)

 

Anyone who knows to read these? There is a great site over at baseops.de. I also have PFPX but it seems like only wind is illustrated in different flightlevels.

 

I guess i want to learn what to look for like turbulence and CB clouds great windstream etc. Dont know to read the maps though.

Could be cool when the weather radar arrives to combine it with ASN live.

Just something related to flying these NAT tracks

 

There are 

 

Westbound (1130z-1900z)   Active NOTAM       Eastbound (0100z-0800z)

 

 

But using flightradar24 you can see that a lot of Oceanic flights is going eastbound right now but not on the "active" NAT´s.

 

So my Q is. 

 

Why eastbound now ? and who is controlling these none active routes ?

The agency responsible for the airspace such as Gander or Shannon, etc.; regardless of if the path is on a NAT or not.  And yes, there is traffic other than on established routes and there are pro's and con's.  Operators of slower aircraft, such as military transports, find it easier ot get a flight plan through the system if they are not on an established track where they could impact the throughput of the system. Of course, origins/destinations other than NAmer and NEurope will file "off track" flight plans.

New York Oceanic, Santa Maria Oceanic, Gander Oceanic and Shanwick Oceanic are responsible for the North Atlantic.

Technically you'd have to add Reykjavik Control to that list since they own most of Greenland's airspace and everything east up until 0°W. You'd hardly ever deal with them directly when tracking a NAT though, most traffic through Reykjavik Control is on a random route.

Most traffic eastbound leave North America in the evening, so that's why you're seeing eastbound being active now. Most west bound traffic leaves in mid-morning or early afternoon; that's when you'll see more west bound tracks active.
