My ASN weather radar gauge for FSX (&P3D?)

Hi all,

I'd like to thank Bryn for making this gauge. We have had a similar one running internally for testing reasons since December. For us this showcases how easy it is for aircraft ND devs to take advantage of our API (that is available to all users of ASN once downloaded). By talking with several of them (including Pete Dowson), we decided that the best would be for ASN to directly export raw data, avoiding sharing GDI transparent images as this would be a significant frames killer.

So, even though I really like Bryn's gauge (as a stand alone solution), I'd suggest any further developments (embedding to a 3d VC ND for example) to be made either directly using ASN API, or fsuipc API (using a late version of fsuipc taking advantage of ASN). This would be the best performance/memory wise. An intermediate layer will only make things more difficult/sloppy.

Thanks,

Kostas Terzides

  • Michael, I'll do that in tomorrow's update - it's possible and very easy.  I should've done it from the beginning, but I was just cutting and pasting SDK code trying to learn it as I went, and I guess

  • Here's me trying to fight my way out of Libreville this morning.  I've put the gauge into the PMDG 737 NGX as a popup. For me, this adds a whole new dimension to flying FS.  I mean, I don't even know

That works for me, because I can't even work out how to get the GDI bitmap semi-transparent :-)

Still, there are some NDs that will never get updated to take advantage of the API. For example Level-D's 767 or PMDG's MD11. It would be nice to find a way to efficiently overlay a radar on those NDs. Maybe in time.

In the meantime, I'm going to focus on turbulence depiction and tidying it all up.

In the PMDG planes, install the little popup gauge that is included in the pack. That should appear in the top left of the screen at all times, and clicking on that should open and close the radar panel.

I hope. :-)

I have tried but it doesn't show up in VC.

Hmmm, I'm not sure.  devgrp in Post #18 has the popup gauge in the VC mode - maybe they can help? (I don't use VCs).

couldn't read the whole topic but it would be awesome if it is possible to embed this gauge to the ngx nd. great job anyway

I'm using FSX acceleration

How do you get this to work in VC?

Downloaded and tested this gauge this morning, excellent job! Really adds immersion until the devs can integrate a WX radar into their nav displays.

Thank you!

I have tried but it doesn't show up in VC.

IF you run out of shift, go to views > instrument panel and select it

does this also work when ASN is running on a networked machine? i tried it today and even relativley cloudy weather with max gain nothing showed up? yes i do realize it reads moisture not just clouds but...just wondering

(guess africa isnt the right place to test this!)

Best Regards

Tobias Gruber

yes indeed it does !!

for now, cheers

I had to open a port for the radar to work in networked mode. There are instructions in the ASN documentation.

I've updated the weather radar today to include a WX-T mode. This shows areas of turbulence in purple (see the picture below - it's my own 2D panel for the PMDG 777)

I've also changed a bit of the underlying code, to try and stop a crash on exit. So if you stumble into crashes or problems with the display, or anything like that, please let me know (they were some fairly fundamental changes).

It's available (as always) at gum.co/bryn.

Hi Bryn,

this looks really, really great!! As long as it's not possible to integrate the WX in the PMDG's ND, I would like to know if it's possible to use your WX on a second computer, where I have my AS running?!

Thx a lot!

David :)
