  1. 1. What do you think of the FSX haze layer?

    • It is wonderful and realistically does the job it needs to do
      2
    • It is better than nothing so I'd rather use it than not
      8
    • It's so unrealistic that it hurts my eyes to see it so it's disabled
      4
    • I don't care either way so it is a non issue
      2
    • I did not know that FSX even had a haze layer

So, what does everyone think about the FSX haze layer?  I think it comes close being great, but its z-buffer dance on mountain sides really kills immersion, so I voted the second choice.  One huge improvement for the haze layer is that ASN disables it until you are above it; this feature is the only reason why I use it.  Before ASN I could not stand seeing it from below, for a do spend a bit of time in that region being a 100% GA flier.  How about you?

I thought it was a good question  :P

Also liked the question. The volumetric fog of P3D does a much better job of obscuring view. I wish the designers of FSX would have looked at the -visibility/moisture of the atmosphere- aspect, but I assume there was some performance reason they decided for the blanket .bmp file. Or they were just rushed.

Here's what the FSX haze layer looks like, just in case you didn't know what the haze layer is (click on the picture to get a larger view).  The primary drawback about having it disabled is that when you climb up out of a limited visibility layer the low visibility suddenly vanishes and it becomes 100% clear in that layer below, which IMO is a complete immersion killer.  Some weather apps attempt to fix this non-haze layer issue but in my experience their solution rarely fixes the problem.

As far as varying the density (visibility) according to the weather conditions, I find that ASN does a very good job doing exactly that.
