Making FSX better...

 Hi guys,

 

Hoping someone can help here! I have my system set up etc and whilst FSX runs well I want it to be better and hoping people can give me a few tips on how to get the most out of FSX!

 

Processor - AMD ii Phenom (x4 3.4Ghz)

GPU - Radeon 6700 1GB

RAM - 8GB (Already got another 8GB on order)

Hard drive - 500gb (Got a 64gb SSD on order)

OS - Windows 7 x64 bit

MB - Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3

 

PS Ive also got ordered the acceleration update.

 

Like I said although Ive got it running well at the minute I do really want to push the boundaries and I know a lot of this can be achieved with add on scenery and patches but I really dont know where to start and whether people can suggest any add ons/patches etc?

PS Ive thought about overclocking my processor but also thinking about investing in a new one at some point anyway so if anyone can recommend then please feel free!

More ram waste of tim. 8 is enough. FSX cant use more than 4. If p3d goes 64 bit than it may have some use.

Liquid cooling - oc as high as you can go.  I'm running my sandy bridge at nearly 5 ghz...

To get more speed you will need a higher overclock. Ideally Intel is better as they have much better clock for clock performance (a 3.4GHz i5 is faster than a 3.4Ghz Phenom). May be worth trying P3Dv2 though, as it's more optimized and they are optimizing further for v2.3 update.

 

Overclocking has it's downsides. It requires aftermarket coolers (or liquid cooling), and it produces heat, which means more fans, which means more noise. I personally got sick of the whirring sound of fans so I went back to stock speeds and replaced everything with slow & quiet fans. I love how quiet it is now, so I hope that P3D can eek out some better performance from more modest processors.

You can make use of SLI , but only in spotplane view or 2d cockpit view ( without gauges )

Overclocking is the way... but if you start with a state of the art Intel i7-4770k processor, coupled with 8GB fast memory, you can run at 4.0 GHz, right out of the box, without any fancy cooling solutions..

 

That will give you a very smooth FSX experience, and from there you can overclock further if you desire.

Already had an understanding that the ram upgrade wouldn't make any difference but needed it for a few other bits I use the computer for.

 

I'm looking at overclocking so I've given the computer and all the fans and heatsink etc a damp good clean out and overlooked up to 3.8ghz so far and just testing the stability of it so far (fingers crossed)...

 

Other than that I'm also looking at maybe a new cpu for the near future, so far the amd fx8350 has caught my eye but I'm running with a gigabyte ga-970-ds3 and from all the literature I've read from the cpu and the motherboard I'm getting conflicting ideas as to whether they are compatible or not!

Once you get to the point of a new CPU... seriously consider Intel for FSX

What's the rate for that combo versus an i5 4670K and a cheap Z87 board (Gigabyte Z87-DS3H or so)?

 

I came from an overclocked Q9450 (slightly better than your X4) to an i5 4670K and got a considerable boost even without overclocking. The gain in efficiency alone is remarkable.

Cheers guys will definitely give it a look! Cars just failed it's MOT so may have to sort that first and look at new motherboard and Cpu on payday!
