Mid-air anyone?

Followed by "The next thingYOU know, you won't know nuthin' at all.":-8 Twice R/W ...On my FIRST solo XC encountered carb icing. It suddenlyoccured to me that my flight DESTRUCTOR...the same one whom when I askedhim what the allowable crosswind component for a PA-28 landing was said"What is a crosswind component"...had never briefed me on carb heatprocedures, and since flight manuals for the aircraft had been on backorder from Piper..I hadn't been able to read up on it. I knew just enough from FAA pubs and other sources, that it was posible to make an already bad situation WORSE by modulating carb heatvs. pulling full on ,depending on the aircraft in question. I decided the best course of action, since I didn't know the CORRECT procedure, was to take an aircraft that was STILL flying...and LEAVE IT THAT WAY. About 15 mi from destination and not loosing a lot of power I figured I could make it unless the engine just welll..QUIT. Having spent 5 years in the CAP and another four as a USAF Air Operations Specialist, I figured the least I could do was save all them nice folks a lot of time in case I Pranged. So I put in a call to VIH FSS...still operational at the time. "Vichy Radio, Cherokee N3690U, Student Pilot.. inbound VFR to Vichy on Radial 270 at 3200 declaring in flight emergency, Carb icing! Vichy responded..do you need DF service to the field? I responded;Negative have field in sight at 5 mi. Then I hear; Vichy Radio Cessna xxxx what altitude? What Radial?I start looking REAL hard. After FSS repeats, I look down and to my left and in a real hard CLIMBING LEFT turn is this C172 headed for my guts. So not having anypower to play with I nosed over a little and went left also...I coulddarn near count the rivets when ,still in a hard climbing turn, he went by. KVIH RWY 22 is BIG...long and wide..ex Naval Air Station, good thingtoo. H... I even lit a smoke on final:-badteeth I taxied up in front of the old Navy Building that housed the FSSto file a flight plan for Quincy...PLUS they had a bathroom which ISURELY needed. Now I thought I had recognised the voice on the otherend of my call. Turns out I was right it was Ken McCurry..an old drinkin buddy. He said "You the one in the Cherokee? Yep says I. He reached in his pocket and threw me a set of keys. I said whatthe H are these. "Keys to that Buick out there," Think I need to drive back to KSUS--says I. Nope he replied...there's a jug in the trunk -just thoughtyou might need a belt. Now that was REAL flight service. :-beerchug Oh I said twice...tell the other one later. Regards Denny

I was flying a C172 over Washington DC in winter, and was looking out the side window....saw a buncha gray and black blocks fly past, and then the plane dived and turned....a Learjet had sliced through me in a headon collision....the bastid didnt even twitch as he flew on without a problem...
