Will Aero affect performance?

I'm not a fan of Windows 7's Basic theme, but every flight I do with FSX, it reverts the system from my Aero theme to Basic. Good news is I recently came across this tweak / fix to prevent FSX from disabling Windows 7 Aero: http://www.flightsim.ee/freeware/fsx-scheme-fix

 

However - will this affect performance? (eg. drop frame rates, stutter... etc) Note that I'm running addons like FS DreamTeam airports, PMDG, ASN, REX, ORBX, Aerosoft Airbus X Ext.

No issues running full screen and Aero here Hank. I am not a fan of W7 basic either, and I use the tweak you linked too.. I also use an affinity mask in the fsx cfg @15 and my fsx is smooth as butter, using unlimited frames. No stutters at all FSDT and flight Beam airports etc.

Currently in cruise; performance is, indeed, smooth as butter! I can finally, after all these years of reverts to the basic theme, continue to use my PC with Aero theme enabled while doing a long haul. Thanks again for your input.

I ran FSX for years in Win 7 basic mode, since it was supposedly incompatible with Aero, and indeed, disabled Aero on startup.

 

I have recently been running the sim with Aero turned on, primarily because Aero has to be enabled in order for Vsync to work with FSX in windowed mode.

 

I'm not using the modified FSX.exe from the site in the linked article above - I'm doing it via FSUIPC, which runs a small batch file to turn Aero back on once FSX begins loading.

 

In any case, have noted absolutely no problems whatsoever. Frame rates are good, VAS useage seems unaffected, windowed Vsync works of course, and if anything, the tendency to stutter when flying in a graphically intense area seems reduced.

 

Indeed P3D requires Aero to be enabled before loading the sim, as it won't work properly without it.

in my FSX.cfg to prevent tearing of vertical objects while panning horizontally.  I've done nothing to enable Aero while running FSX and have no tearing in either windowed or full screen mode.  Can you elaborate?

I'm wrong.   I originally checked the Moooney Bravo for tearing in both modes and saw no tearing in either.  I checked in the C172 and tearing was clearly present in windowed mode.  Now my question is what other changes are required to eliminate the tearing in windowed mode besides enabling Aero?  My question is largely academic as I seldom fly windowed.

To get vsync to work in windowed mode, you will need the line ForceWindowedVsync=1 in your FSX.cfg, along with the Aero re-start after FSX initializes. The restart of Aero can be accomplished via FSUIPC, via the modified FSX.exe from FSEstonia (though I'm not sure it's entirely legal to redistribute a hacked FSX.exe as they do), or by a couple of other methods involving batch files.

 

If you google "FSX windowed vsync", it should take you to several YouTube videos and online articles that discuss the various techniques.

 

AFAIK, Aero is NOT required for vsync in full-screen mode.

 

I also have vsync enabled (at 1/2 monitor refresh rate) in my FSX profile in NVidia Inspector.

No, it doesn't hurt anything, in fact it helps by enabling better Vsync support in windowed mode. I use Word Not Allowed's method with FSUIPC of getting it to pop back into Aero mode after the sim launches.

 

Aero basically makes the entire Windows desktop run in 3D mode - Vsync has problems if a game window is 3D mode and the rest of windows is 2D mode, which is what happens by default when Aero gets disabled.
